A review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The 15th of July My brother (Voldemort), his girlfriend (Death-eater), my wife (Gryffindor student), and I (Slytherin Student) donned our Harry Potter apparel and headed for the Cinema.

Short Version: If you liked the other movies and liked the books you will like it. If you are a crazed fan of the books you’ll have a few problems with the movie but still admit it’s one of the best.

Armstrong 3 – Part 2

You might remember the Armstrong 3 from this Word of the Day story.

***

It had been two years since Angel and the others had set off on their mission to explore space. The crew of the Armstrong 3 had yet to meet any intelligent life. They’d discovered a native space creature that the crew nick named the Space Manatee but no intelligent life. If it wasn’t for Alina Pierre, the biologist and botanist, Angel would have been extremely uncomfortable on small ship with the four other men. Angel was a small woman who had trouble staying still; she had graduated from flight school at the age of fifteen and won the assignment to the Armstrong 3 when she was just seventeen. It was just a few days before her nineteenth birthday and she was feeling restless.

“What’s wrong Angel?” Alina spoke her name with a French accent which reminded her of home.

“I know… but well when I volunteered twenty years out in the black didn’t seem so long. Or boring for that matter.”

“I can understand but we have discovered over a hundred new life forms since we’ve left.”

At this statement Angel wrinkled her nose. “Yeah but except for the Manatee they’ve all been microscopic. I’m sorry but I’m a pilot and a weapons expert, microbes don’t really make life interesting for me.”

Before Alina could reply the captains voice rang over the loudspeaker. “We have an unidentified object forty degrees to starboard. All hands to your posts.”

Standing Angel smiled and ran out of the garden bay saying, “Finally something interesting.”

* * *

“We have the object on camera sir” said Sidney Smith, his black hair still ruffled from sleep.

It was roughly triangular with semi circles jutting out, and made of some form of polished metal.

Everyone was silent as they beheld what could only be a craft or probe made by intelligent creatures.

“Sid, try contacting them, try all frequencies and send the universal greetings.” said the captain.

Accessing the pre-recorded greetings in every known human language, Sidney turned and asked, “You don’t actually believe that they speak any of our languages do you?”

It was at this point that Angel walked onto the bridge and took her post. She nodded at the captain and gasped as she looked at the object. It was slowly turning a reddish colour and the point of the triangle moved to point in their direction.

“Sir, I’m getting an increase in energy on the ship, they’re either powering up engines or weapons.” Sidney sounded a little tense.

“You can’t tell which?” asked the captain and Sidney shook his head, “Evasive manoeuvres Angel let’s make sure we’re out of their way whether they’re trying to leave or fire. Make sure to keep playing the greetings, they might get the message eventually.”

The small triangular craft followed them as Angel moved the ship to avoid attack. It was more manoeuvrable then the Armstrong Three. The craft fired on them four times in quick succession and Angel managed to avoid all but one.

The captain ordered them to fire back and within moments two missiles were flying out towards their new enemy. The two missiles collided with the ship, exploding on impact. The blast left small amounts of debris and a lot of questions.

To Be continued…

A review of The Proposal

proposalThis Canada Day it was supposed to rain so me and my Wife decided to catch up on our cinema time.

I’ve always enjoyed both Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, they are funny and always manage to make things fresh despite those same things having been done a million times before.

Short Version: The main actors don’t have much sexual chemistry but they have a lot of comedic chemistry. Plus the supporting cast is great. It’s a solid romantic comedy.

Also I think it’s a great date movie that could bring up lots of personal questions with your partner.

A review of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

RoTFThis Canada Day it was supposed to rain so my Wife and I decided to catch up on our cinema time.

I like the first Transformers, it was easy to watch and pretty entertaining. It was a typical summer blockbuster. The second one accomplished the same thing despite having a few pacing issues.

Short Version: If you enjoyed the first one and can turn your brain off while giant robots beat each other to death, than you’ll enjoy RoTF

Wedding Hiatus

Wedding

I hate bloggers and web-cartoonists that spend all their time explaining, complaining and, bemoaning their lack of updates. However I do want to mention that I was married this June 12th and that’s the major reason for the 29 day hiatus. So for the 2 people who don’t know me personally and haven’t seen them yet, you can check out the pictures of my wedding at JenEricWedding.

Thanks for your patience.

Buffy Reboot Idea

buffy_logoIf you’re a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, either the series or the original movie, than you might have heard that there are talks of a Reboot movie.

Whether you’re outraged at the thought of a Reboot or of Whedon not being involved you must admit that the story has a lot of interesting angles.

If I were to write the new Buffy movie here’s what I’d do:

Cast:
Buffy Summers: Molly C. Quinn from Castle. She’s a little young but has the acting chops to pull it off.
Joyce Summers: Amy Adams as the Ju-jitsu instructor/ Anthropologist mother. She normally doesn’t play action roles but would be great with Quinn and could definitely train for it.
Watcher: Gerard Butler as a non-action geeky “Supernatural” nerd type of watcher.
Villain: Gary Oldman as a brutal and intelligent vampire.
Comic Relief: Andy Serkis and Paul Bettany as overeducated fast talking vampires.

Storylines:
There would have to be several storylines running through the movie that hasn’t been done before in Buffy history. Within each of the storylines there would be several mini stories.
Main 1: Buffy discovers her powers and as a preppy cheerleader is unprepared for them and is thrust into a dangerous situation. I’d avoid a lot of the high school stuff after she discovers her powers and concentrate on her strained relationship with her mom as she teaches Buffy how to fight.
Main 2: Villain is trying to kill the slayer. He became a vampire to save his daughter from some disease having to turn her into one too but it didn’t help. He’s been trying to find a cure for her disease. Finds some old book that says the still beating heart of a Slayer cures anything in vampires.
Love: In a twist the love story wouldn’t involve Buffy but her mom and the watcher. Reverse damsel in distress scenario.
Comic: Having most of their clan wiped out by the Villain, our comic reliefs decide to try and help him by catching Buffy but continuously fail. I want to make clear these “clowns” are going to be more of a cheesy/witty comedy that will lend itself to a darker story.

Opening:
I think it would be very important to set the scene with a dark and dirty backdrop in a large city alley where a “traditional” slayer is kicking vampire ass hand to hand. Her watcher looms in the back and as he watches her a shadow comes behind him and slits his neck.

She wins the fight and slays her last foe when she gets shot in the head by a vamp sniper on the roof. The bullet goes through her head and into a propane or natural gas tank. The shadow screams in anger and literally runs up the building towards the sniper and kills the vampire and howls into the night.

Then we go to a cheer practice where Buffy is basically teaching the choreography and doing some things that surprise even her. This is interspersed with scenes of her mom teaching an advanced weapons Jujitsu. Early in the sequence you see a man hiding in the shadows watching Buffy and at the end you see the same man walk up the Joyce and try to stutteringly tell her about Buffy. She of course ignores it and promptly forgets.

Then we’d go to the mother picking up Buffy and them arguing. Something should slip about the Dad being dead (3-4 years.) I really want you to get the feeling that they are all each other have.

Etc etc.

Well that’s my basic idea. What do you think?
