Before I start ranting about Fourth Edition, here’s an article from GeekDad over at Wired that I completely agree with and think has some wonderful ideas

Dungeons and Dragons Fourth Edition

I’d like to preface this by saying: I am not an expert on RPG’s I’ve played D&D 3.5 almost exclusively for the past five years.

With that said I haven’t enjoyed fourth edition. It seems stiffening for both the GM and the players.

NaNoWriMo Update Three

I’ve finally written past the boring parts of my novel. I’m sure they’re interesting to read, they just weren’t much fun to write. The characters are working together and I have more actions scenes coming up. I’m finding it a little hard to right cool gunfight scenes, maybe I should re-watch Firefly.

I’ve long past the NaNoWriMo halfway mark and I’m quickly approaching the novels half way mark. The halfway mark is 45 000 words. It’s intimidating to think I’ll have to keep this pace up over to most of December. It’s a lot of work but I’m really enjoying it, I wish I could do this for a living, maybe someday.

I have no illusions about this novel. As it is I know a lot of it needs retooling. I need to go back and edit all the dialogue to make it flow better. I also need to go back and fix the issue I seem to have with starting three out of four paragraphs with a noun or pronoun. I also need to beef up the descriptions of my characters and the world.

It’s interesting to me, that the character I liked most and had best fixed in my head before hand is most likely going to get cut from the first half of the book. He has four mini-chapters dedicated to his journals and I think I’ll just cut them out completely. I find they’re too world building oriented.

I’m keeping the polls from last week open since the twists will happen in the middle of the book, in about 10 000 more words.

It fascinates me what kind of emotions I’ve gone through, most of the first week I felt elated and couldn’t wait to write, the second I felt terrible I hated the novel and wanted to give up completely, now the third week it feels more like work but I look forward to discovering what happens.

For everyone who would like to be a Test/Beta reader, please email me or make a comment on one of my posts and I’ll get you a copy of the book when it’s done the second draft.

Here’s a poll for all you aspiring Writers.

Thank you for your continuing support.

NaNoWriMo Update Two

I’m at chapter eleven with almost 25 000 words written. I still don’t know where things are going I do know its time to make a huge shift in the story. I’ve been building up and now the group is almost together. The drama is about to start and the first world changing adventure is about to start.

I’ve been alternating between the story and a character writing in his journal. I don’t think I like it. I find I’m telling too much in a short space of time.

I’ve decided to keep writing after NaNoWriMo is done and try to get this book to between 80 000 and 100 000 words. It needs a lot of work and the editing alone will be killer but I’ll have written a novel and that’s all I’m aiming for now.

After this next section I’m going to need to shake things up a lot what should I do?

No one commented on the possible Title so here’s a poll with choices:

Thank you for your support and hopefully the middle will flow half as easy as the start.

Thoughts Nov 10, 2008

There are few things that make Mondays seem exciting, The Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack is certainly one of them.

Dollhouse, the new Joss Whedon show, and Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles are going to be back to back on Fridays in Winter. The only show that’s managed to thrive in that timeslot on Fox was X-Files. This is the timeslot that killed Firefly. Sigh.

NaNoWriMo Update I

As 2pm Wednesday the 5th of November, 2008. I have 12 241 words. I’ve been writing a lot more then I thought I’d be able too. I seem to be averaging 2000 to 2500 words a day. I hope I can keep it up.

I’m working with “Viridian Skies” as a title. What do you think?

There are Five main Characters so far, and two villains of sorts. It seems I’ve missed the boat completely with the Absurd goofiness that I wanted to put into the novel. It’s closer to gritty and dramatic.

My chapters have been short around 2000 words. I think this still works so far. They might need to be extended or just grown over the rest of the book. I’m not sure yet. I’m really letting this flow naturally. I’m trying not to over think it. I have Ideas of how it’ll end but I’m not sure. I’d like to kill a character but I’m really not sure about that.

The world is developing well; everyone has a power of sorts, either drawing from psionic forces or arcane. Out of the five main characters only one is psionic and the other four are arcane. We have:

Cassandra Davanne: An ex con who’s trying to get herself out of trouble. She’s a hell of a fighter. She’s an fire Elemental. Meaning she can create and control limited magical fire around her body.

Arthur Jackson: He’s an AWOL Knight (Cross between cop and soldier.) who’s trying to discover the reason for his wife’s death. He’s a Jumper (I need a better name for it.) He can teleport short distances and has perfect night vision.

Paige: A cute little girl living on her own. She’s a Psionic and very powerful.

Roland Lavallée: A young retired Knight and very socially awkward. He’s a healer.

Richard Washburn: An old retired Knight who was too honest for the force. He’s Flyer.

As far as the story goes here’s a little taste with the chapter tittles.

Chapter One – In which we meet Cassandra Davanne and wonder why she’s so angry.
Chapter Two – In which we find Arthur Jackson wallowing in the past
Chapter Three – In which we meet Paige and her interesting logic.
Chapter Four – In which we learn about Roland Lavallée and his short career as a knight.
Chapter Five – In which we discover that Love is a beautiful thing and assassination is not.

I’d love to hear comments of suggestions
Thank you!

A Review of Disney’s High School Musical 3

Yes, I’m a twenty five year old guy who went to see High School Musical 3. I of course went with my beautiful fiancée. I’ll state in advance that the first two High School Musicals were guilty pleasures for me. They’re not the greatest movies in the world, they’re cheesy, awkward, and beyond ridiculous but a lot of fun.

You can’t start comparing these to classic Musicals like Sound Of Music or Fiddler on the Roof. For what they are they succeed on almost all counts.

NaNoWriMo Part VI

Just under twelve hours before NaNoWriMo starts and closer to twenty four before I do, and I’m really getting nervous. I’ve been reading others blogs and other websites. It feels like everyone’s written an outline and planed their story. I have nothing ready except for Genre and Mood. I guess that’s something but reading that some people have their plot points set out worries me.

I’m getting a lot of support from friends and family and that helps settle me down. However every time I think about it my heart starts thumping and I get a little giddy.

My biggest problem is going to be not editing myself. I’ll often write a paragraph and then re-read it, over and over again, fixing little issues. I usually miss the homonyms, cursed things! If I can write straight I think I can average 1000 words an hour. That means an average of 2 hours writing daily. Gah! What have I gotten myself into?

Alright let’s see what I have decided so far with everyone’s help.

Genre: Modern Fantasy, with elements of Sci-fi and Detective/Filmnoir
Mood: A strange balance between Gritty and Absurd.

The first chapter will definitely introduce us to the characters, probably in the style of a Disaster story, jumping back and forth between characters and media.

I’m thinking of maybe writing journal entries that will introduce us to the world but not have anything to do with the main characters. Sort of a mini Auto-biography spread out through the book.

Other then that I have nothing; hopefully when I look over the polls, inspiration will hit harder then a crazed duck who thinks I’m a loaf of bread.

NaNoWriMo V

Wednesday polls are still open and I’m leaning to a world that everyday magic randomly starts again but we’ll see what happens.

Today will have five polls three about the Heroes and two about villains. This will help me get a clearer Idea of the characters. I will not look at these results till Saturday when I start to write.

As I’ve mentioned, I will blog from time to time, min once a week, with updates on how I’m doing. If I get stuck I’ll put up another poll asking what you think should happen.

On with the polls:

*Many of these will only let you vote for one thing, I want it that way.*

Thanks again!

NaNoWriMo IV

It seems I’ve contradicted myself already and I haven’t even started the darn story. I said in my first NaNoWriMo post that I would put a character related poll Friday, yet yesterday I said I would put it up today. I know just how to fix this, two sets of polls. Today Character styles, sexes, and motivations; tomorrow Villains and Heroes. Rejoice at the Poll-y goodness.

Humm It seems that PollDaddy and WordPress are having a minor software issue. Looks like there will be a bunch of polls tomorrow if it works.

As for today, I’d like Names, the stranger and more steeped with meaning the better. I want character names, villain names, pet names, place names etc.

Thanks again for all your help.
