Comiccon 2017 Report

Thank You!

Hello My Imaginary Friends,

With my week off and 2d6 Con drain, I forgot to talk about Ottawa Comiccon 2017. First things first:

Thank You!You made this years’ comiccon the best we’ve ever had, both in sales and in great company. We had a lot of people coming by to see Baby Dragon (who was quite the trooper) and a lot of return customers.

A great big thank you goes to Lindsay (GiLove2Dance) for sharing a table again this year and helping with Dragon. It was nice to get a break when she stole the baby and walked around.

We’re almost recovered from Comiccon now, so it’s time to start thinking about our next events. Our next selling event is C.O.N. Creative Ottawa Nerds Craft Show. It’s one of my favourite shows.

Thank you again, and hope to see you June 10th,

Éric

Aurora Awards Nominations

study ebook cover

Hello My Imaginary Friends,

Allow me to be completely shameless. This year I have a book, a short story, and a few projects that are eligible for the Aurora Awards.

Aurora Awards

aurora

The Aurora Awards are awards, “for excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy works and activities.” They are administered by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association.

It’s a fan voted award in the vein of the Hugo’s, but with way more awesome people.

You’ll have to join the CSFFA for a pittance of $10 before you can nominate anyone. Once you’ve paid, you can nominate 5 works in each category. You can nominate works from now until May 6th.

The extra bonus of joining the CSFFA is you’ll get a voters package that includes most of the works that make the ballot. That’s 8-10 novels plus a bunch of other awesome stuff.

What do I have that’s eligible

study ebook cover

My debut novel, A Study in Aether is eligible in the YA category and my short story Gladiators in SPACE!  is eligible for Short Story.

Recommendations

Now that I’ve been shameless, here are a few works that I think are truly worth an award this year:

Novels

YA Novels

Related Work

Fan Writing and Publication

Fan Organizational

Other Options

The Aurora’s website has a section that lets you see eligible works. I like to think of it as a shopping list.

Go Nominate Works and enjoy the amazing science fiction and fantasy that came out last year.

Wood burning

Wood burning is an art that 9five7 Pyrography (Facebook, Twitter, website) has perfected. We are in awe of their work and now Keladry has this beautiful piece on her wall! You can see them (and buy or commission from them) at CON Creative Ottawa Nerds on November 26!

Kevin Johns

When you go to Can-Con, you get to meet some pretty fantastic people. The attendees are fun and intelligent, you get to listen to panels by experts in their field, and you get to meet some amazing authors. I cannot speak highly enough about this convention. Seriously, our favourite of the year. (And that includes the one that *I* organize – CON Creative Ottawa Nerds!)

This is one of the amazing authors I mentioned in the above paragraph. Kevin Johns has written several books, including as a ghost writer (I didn’t know those existed on this plane!) and he is a writing coach. He hosts free webinars occasionally, of which I have had the opportunity to attend quite a few, and he really knows what he’s talking about. And he has a new book coming out soon – M School! I was one of the fortunate few who got to Beta read this book, and OMG is it ever good!

You can meet him, and many others (including us, barring circumstances), at Can-Con 2016, happening Sept 9 – 11, 2016 at the Novotel in downtown Ottawa! I saw a sneak peek of the schedule – it’s going to be even better than last year, which I didn’t think was possible!

One of the first costumes we saw on the Friday of Ottawa Comic Con was this one, and did it ever start the weekend off right! She’s perfect!

Come out to CON Creative Ottawa Nerds tomorrow!! You are completely welcome to cosplay, and the crocheted TARDIS will be available for pictures. 😀

Creative Ottawa Nerds Craft Fair!!!

A dark roast with strawberry flavouring

Hello My Imaginary Friends,

Saturday is one of my favourite events C.O.N – Craft Fair. I’m a little biased since my wife is one of the organizers, but I also love the feel of the event.

It’s a different crowd from bigger events and is very non-geek friendly. The exhibitors are always awesome and the crowds tend to stick around and chat.

If you have the chance, come by and check it out. The entry fee is low (adults $5 or two non perishables, kids are free) and all proceeds from it and the silent auction go to the Ottawa Food Bank.

For C.O.N. and by request of the Ottawa Browncoats, I have finally created a Firefly-themed coffee.

So come see us on Saturday and try Kaylee’s Coffee.

See you Saturday!

Ming-Na Wen

We asked Ming-Na if she wanted to have a part in the live-action Mulan that Disney is doing. She replied with a very enthusiastic YES! I said that it was too bad that there weren’t more female roles, and she said she’d be happy to play Mulan’s mother. I think she could pull off Mulan herself, personally. Follow Ming-Na on Twitter here. She’s awesome!

My costume was borrowed from the talented Mysticfae sisters. I wasn’t wearing the wig yet because I didn’t know how to put it on. I loved being the mother of dragons for half a day!

Also, don’t forget that CON Creative Ottawa Nerdscraft fair is coming up fast – one week from tomorrow! Who’s excited? Who’s coming to check out the amazing vendors? Have you been having fun guessing who the vendors are each day?

Michelle Gomez

Michelle Gomez was a delight to meet! We asked her what she enjoyed about playing the role of Missy, and she said “Everything! It’s so much fun!”

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for CON Creative Ottawa Nerdscraft fair! It’s coming up fast, on Saturday, June 11!

Holiday Shopping!

CON-CreativeOttawaNerds

Hello Imaginary Friends,

Sometimes it’s really, Really, REALLY hard to find a gift for family and friends.

You want to find that WOW gift that is both unique and awesome; the gift that the person receiving will be ranting about for years.

My amazing wife knit me a Baker scarf for Christmas three years ago. It was her first knitting project. Not all of us can create stuff that is that awesome.

Here’s a secret for finding that most awesome gift: Check out your local convention’s artist alley. The things you’ll find there are awe inspiring.

Conventions

popexpo

For those in Ottawa, this weekend is PopExpo. Most of the vendors will have lots of stock and some will even take commissions. (Come see us at tables 2214 & 2216) P.S. Kids under 12 get in for free and they have awesome stuff for kids!

If you don’t want to go to the convention, check out their website they almost always have a list of previous or future vendors.

Vacation

My wife is a travel agent (Check out her blog), which means she’s travelled a little and the TARDIS travels a lot, but me, I haven’t travelled for anything but weddings in around four years. So we’re going to Disney World! Yay! I’m really excited.

Between my trip to Disney and needing to do a huge amount of editing on my books (A Study in Aether and Parasomnia), I’m going to take the next three weeks off from blogging.

Don’t worry; I’ll have a special treat for you while I’m away. Tune in next Tuesday for a brand new story.

See you around,
Éric
