BIG Coffee News!

Good News!

My wife and I, sat down and calculated how well we were doing with coffee.

We’ve sold a lot of coffee but until we sat and calculated cost vs profit there was no way of knowing if we were losing money.

After a little over a year and eight conventions we’re making more money then we’re spending on coffee. It’s not a lot more but enough to justify continuing.

So we will have coffee beans available for Ottawa Comic Con, Creative Ottawa Nerds Craft Fair, and possible Geek Market.

What’s Next?

There were two choices for the future. Either we continue the way we have or we expand production and try to streamline our process. We’ll be going with option two and expanding our production.

It’s a risk but hopefully, with your help, it’ll pay off.

What does that Mean?

It means selling more coffee and being smart about it.

Buying in bulk

This year we’ve been buying what we need for each convention and nothing more. However the more you buy of something the cheaper it becomes. This year has proven that there’s a demand for good flavoured coffee and I can stop worrying about ending up with useless supplies. (I hope)

Roaster

Currently it takes me, depending on the roast, 7-12 minutes per 100g bag of coffee. If you consider that on average we make roughly 25 bags that size and 40 smaller bags. That means it takes me roughly 5+ hours for a moderately sized con.

My hopes are to buy a roaster on Boxing Day. The roaster I want can roast 900g per batch and will take around 15-20 minutes per batch. It should also allow for a more even roast and a darker dark roast.

Core Flavours

I need your help.

I want to have a core amount of flavours that will always be available at a convention. I was thinking one of each kind of roast (Light, Medium, or Dark.

Please vote below on your favourite of each category and between that and demand I’ll decide on the core flavours.

NaNoWriMo/Viridian Sky Update Four

The novel is going really well, I’ll officially hit 50 000 later today technically winning NaNoWriMo. I’m surprised how easy it was for me to force myself to write everyday and I’m also impressed at how difficult it was to write. I hope I can keep the same pace or close in the coming month.

The book is split into three parts, the first part being introduction, the second being the race, and the third being still unknown.

I’m coming up to the end of the second part. It has been filled with action and I’m starting to get better at describing fight scenes, I think. The characters have been growing together and the angst-y romance is coming together. The big twists will be coming up at the end of part two so please keep voting.

[polldaddy poll=1100137]

I have a large battle with one of the main baddies and after that I’m completely stumped. I’ve never reached an ending for a book before and this one doesn’t seem to have a clear cut ending. As with other times I was stuck here’s a poll.

[polldaddy poll=1141719]

I’ve decided on Viridian Sky as the title but that can always change. In future posts I’ll refer to the book by its title instead of NaNoWriMo.

Hope the next 30 000 or 40 000 words go as easily as the first 50 000.

Thank you!

NaNoWriMo Update Three

I’ve finally written past the boring parts of my novel. I’m sure they’re interesting to read, they just weren’t much fun to write. The characters are working together and I have more actions scenes coming up. I’m finding it a little hard to right cool gunfight scenes, maybe I should re-watch Firefly.

I’ve long past the NaNoWriMo halfway mark and I’m quickly approaching the novels half way mark. The halfway mark is 45 000 words. It’s intimidating to think I’ll have to keep this pace up over to most of December. It’s a lot of work but I’m really enjoying it, I wish I could do this for a living, maybe someday.

I have no illusions about this novel. As it is I know a lot of it needs retooling. I need to go back and edit all the dialogue to make it flow better. I also need to go back and fix the issue I seem to have with starting three out of four paragraphs with a noun or pronoun. I also need to beef up the descriptions of my characters and the world.

It’s interesting to me, that the character I liked most and had best fixed in my head before hand is most likely going to get cut from the first half of the book. He has four mini-chapters dedicated to his journals and I think I’ll just cut them out completely. I find they’re too world building oriented.

I’m keeping the polls from last week open since the twists will happen in the middle of the book, in about 10 000 more words.

It fascinates me what kind of emotions I’ve gone through, most of the first week I felt elated and couldn’t wait to write, the second I felt terrible I hated the novel and wanted to give up completely, now the third week it feels more like work but I look forward to discovering what happens.

For everyone who would like to be a Test/Beta reader, please email me or make a comment on one of my posts and I’ll get you a copy of the book when it’s done the second draft.

Here’s a poll for all you aspiring Writers.

Thank you for your continuing support.

NaNoWriMo Update Two

I’m at chapter eleven with almost 25 000 words written. I still don’t know where things are going I do know its time to make a huge shift in the story. I’ve been building up and now the group is almost together. The drama is about to start and the first world changing adventure is about to start.

I’ve been alternating between the story and a character writing in his journal. I don’t think I like it. I find I’m telling too much in a short space of time.

I’ve decided to keep writing after NaNoWriMo is done and try to get this book to between 80 000 and 100 000 words. It needs a lot of work and the editing alone will be killer but I’ll have written a novel and that’s all I’m aiming for now.

After this next section I’m going to need to shake things up a lot what should I do?

[polldaddy poll=1100137]

No one commented on the possible Title so here’s a poll with choices:

Thank you for your support and hopefully the middle will flow half as easy as the start.

NaNoWriMo V

Wednesday polls are still open and I’m leaning to a world that everyday magic randomly starts again but we’ll see what happens.

Today will have five polls three about the Heroes and two about villains. This will help me get a clearer Idea of the characters. I will not look at these results till Saturday when I start to write.

As I’ve mentioned, I will blog from time to time, min once a week, with updates on how I’m doing. If I get stuck I’ll put up another poll asking what you think should happen.

On with the polls:

*Many of these will only let you vote for one thing, I want it that way.*

NaNoWriMo Part III

In the Genre category we have 31 votes as of Wednesday the 29th at 10:50am. In first place is Modern Fantasy with 9 votes; second place is High Fantasy with 4 votes; and third is a three was tie between Modern Sci-fi, Detective/Film Noir, and Autobiography of a fictional character.

Seeing as many people want some fantasy, this poll will deal with the elements you want to see in it. Most of these will appear but the winner of the poll will be the most prominent.

[polldaddy poll=1056176]

In the Mood category we have 31 votes as of Wednesday the 29th at 10:50am. In first place is Humour Satire with 8 votes; in a close second is Humour Goofy Absurd with 6 votes; and third is Gritty with 4 votes.

Satire pulled up front pretty early in the game, I’m not sure if it’s going to be easy and in this case I think I’ll deviate from the poll results and go with more of a cross between Gritty and absurd.

This helped me make up my mind as to what feel this will have and now I want to ask about your opinion on the Setting.

[polldaddy poll=1056193]

Tune in tomorrow for Characters.
Thank you for your comments and votes.

NaNoWriMo Part II

I’ve had a lot of people tell me the usual writing axioms. I want to clarify my intentions with these polls. They’re ideas to inspire me. I’m taking a cue from my days in improv where we were given a title, category, style, and time limit. With this limited information we needed to create a story. While writing I get ideas for scenes and think “that would be awesome in my story” and then I add it. Sadly this tends to make stringing the scenes together difficult, that’s why I like to set a theme, mood, characters, and genre. It gives me the guidelines I need to string a bunch of interesting scenes together.

I start at the beginning and as I get Ideas I write them down in point form and cross them out when I finish writing the Idea.

The polls are very useful for inspiration. I used this method a year or so ago to write a script for a webcomic. I now have major story arcs for 3 years worth of strips and detailed scripts for the first 6 months. The major hiccup is my slow speed at learning to draw. The writing was much simpler then I thought even if it was labour intensive.

That’s what I’m hoping to do with these polls.

Thank you and please remember to vote.
