Superman (2025) – JenEric Movie Review

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2025 film Superman.

Story

The least believable part of the story was its dated and naive premise that people can be swayed by the media. Lex had literal mind controlled monkeys manipulating the internet and yet didn’t have a plan for meddling newspaper reporters?

Beyond that part, the movie paints the most depressing picture of the human race I have seen outside of the news.

Everyone keeps talking about how hopeful the movie is and I only saw darkness. Superman may have been a beacon of hope but he was ridiculed for it, called foolish, made the butt of the joke, and even at the end of the movie, the other heroes do the most brutal acts in his name.

Score: 0

Characters

This Superman is wonderful. He’s human, believable, flawed, and impulsive. His acts of kindness, with one exception, are met with brutal retribution, mockery, and derision. However, the actor did a splendid job. Lex, Lois, and the Kents were wonderful.

The awkward misogyny of Jimmy and Tess was eye-rollingly bad.

The other metas were mostly jerks with large egos. Mr. Terrific lived up to his name however.

Score: 0.5

Dialogue

Any part with Lois or the Kents was fantastic.

Superman’s speeches and Lex’s rants were equally well delivered.

Score: 1

Visuals and Music

The visuals were okay but relied on shaky-cam more than my migraine-addled brain would like. The large set pieces often felt superfluous to the plot. Style over story.

The music had homages to Reeves movies but the theme was played at odd times. Like they had to convince us that he was doing something heroic. It also never hits the clarity or strength of brass as the original.

Score: 0.5

Fun

I REALLY wanted to like this. I loved the new Superman but despite being named after him it was mostly “things that happen around Superman.”

Too much time was used fighting random monsters that could have been used on character development and interactions. We see Clark for one scene, there are three with Lois and him, and only two with the parents.

When I said I wanted a more human Superman, I didn’t mean I wanted to see him get beat up and bleed. I meant I wanted to see him as himself not just the icon.

I’m also annoyed that at the end he decided to start killing. I get why he needed to kill his clone but the flying soldiers at the end were fried with no chance or compassion.

Score: 0

Overall

This is a hopeful Superman in a world that believes the news and where billionaires can get their comeuppance. The movie’s message of hope is lost in the mocking and brutality, and in the fact that Superman did almost nothing except survive.

The movie spends more screen time with gags (like Krypto being poorly behaved) or pointless fights than it does developing characters or plot.

Final Score: 2 Stars out of 5

DC League of Super-Pets – JenEric Movie Review

How This Works – Read Other Reviews

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2022 film DC League of Super-Pets.

Story

A basic superhero meets animal adventure. The background of the characters is surprisingly touching and the story moves along at a great pace. There were at least two or three excellent surprises.

Score: 1

Characters

I’m not a huge fan of some of the voice actors, but the villain and the turtle made it awesome. Overall, the characters were nuanced and fun. One of the better DC movies when it comes to balanced characters.

Score: 1

Dialogue

The dialogue was all over the place. From some deep well thought-out to borderline incomprehensible lines.

Score: 0.5

Visuals and Music

The animation was good, but very basic compared to its modern counterparts, closer to DC’s animated kids shows then something Disney or Sony would put out. That being said, it was well framed and had some awesome colours.

The music was good. The score did what it needed and thankfully borrowed from other DC movies. The choice of songs was perfect for comedy and tone.

Score: 0.5

Fun

This was a fun movie for the whole family. The 3 year old was extremely upset we weren’t watching Paw Patrol (he didn’t know there was a difference since he’s only ever watched 1 episode), but after a few scenes he was hooked. The 6 year old loved it. The rest of us enjoyed it too.

Score: 1

Overall

This is a lighter take on the usually grim DC universe. The pets are likeable with excellent characters and great jokes. This is a superhero movie that reminds us what a great kids superhero movie can be. It’s young, but with lots of heart.

Final Score: 4 Stars out of 5

Supergirl

This picture is a throwback to Ottawa Comic Con 2014, when I was cosplaying as Supergirl. But that’s because Supergirl starts TONIGHT and I am super (pun intended) excited about it!! Catch the new show on CBS at 8:30pm tonight! (This is not its usual timeslot, so be careful when scheduling your PVR.)

Brandon Routh

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Brandon Routh! (Twitter) Honestly, we weren’t going to get an autograph from him because of time (we were selling at Pop Expo for the second year in a row) and money (I’m in school). But it turned out that we had the time (very small turnout – it was disappointing) and the money. We happened to walk past Brandon Routh’s table when there was no line, and he was still there, so we walked right up to him. We said that we loved him in Partners (comedy show of a half season in length that is brilliant and should never have been cancelled!) and he replied that he loved that show, too. He was so incredibly sweet! (Morgan of Geek Charming has an awesome story about her meeting with him here). AND the best part? He loved my TARDIS. He liked it so much that he wrote down the number of our booth, and then searched it out! Totally made my weekend.

SONY DSC

Super guy

Dean Cain was amazing to meet. He found a way to interact on a personal level with every single person he met. He liked my TARDIS! Got to love our identical tongues between our teeth…

I am only going to be posting on Mondays and Thursdays until further notice. As I am gearing up for my first ever Geek Market, where I will be selling my creations, I do not have as much time to take pictures. I will try to keep to this new schedule. Please bear with me.
