I’ve seen the first four episodes of Sanctuary and I like it. It has a great classic Sci-fi feel to it. Very episodic so far and I’m looking forward to seeing if it’s going to have an overall arc or keep going with cool separate episodes.
*Warning Spoilers*
Story:
A Hundred year, and some, old woman who still looks in her 30’s hunts monsters in order to help and study them.
The idea of Sanctuary is novel, in that it really pushes the idea that no matter how strange and dangerous something is, it deserves to live; in other words PETA for freaks and monsters.
Each episode follows but is self contained. As of yet there’s no overarching bad guy or quest. The writing is pretty good a little slow at times and the dialogue is a little odd. Overall it works with the whole style of the show. The important thing is, it’s not obvious. I don’t feel like I’ve figured the show out after 5 minutes, the twists are fun and surprising. As a bonus it really makes you think about morals and how you’d feel being in some of these people’s places.
Pacing:
The first episode is slow. Very slow! The other three were a little better, they’re not quick action packed but they are interesting and fun the whole way through.
Acting:
Amanda Tapping with a British accent, once you get over the sexiness, is believable. I see no shadows of her previous roles. The rest of the characters are a little stereotypical but I see them growing quickly. As for the actors, their very good and I honestly feel for them.
Production Value:
Absolutely amazing!!! It’s almost completely filmed on green screen and it looks better then many other shows out there. Sometimes you can tell its green screen but overall it’s really well done. The detailing, buildings, and landscapes are breath taking.
Potential:
Lot’s of potential here to become a classic modern sci-fi.
Overall:
If they can start a good arc and keep with these classic episodes they’ll be great. As it is Sanctuary is, I tend to forget it exists till I check my PVR and see it’s been taped. Then I really want to watch it.
I find it’s a great counterbalance to Supernatural.
At this point I give it 7.5 out of 10.
