The boat was engulfed in flames and all they could do is watch.
“It’s not sinking. I’m going to swim it,” Ethan said moving for the shore.
“Don’t be stupid. That’s too far away.” Arun sounded like he was in shock, his words were monotone and said without emphasis.
“If he was thrown clear, I have to make sure he doesn’t drown.” Ethan made it clear that he was going.
“That’s really far…” Zoe didn’t sound convinced Ethan could make it.
“I’ve been swimming my whole life. I competed before becoming a cop. I’ll be fine.”
“I’ll go with you.” Riko hated water, but was starting to hate this island even more. She moved to follow him and he pulled her into a hug. He was warm despite the coolness and she felt better while he held her.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll take a life jacket in case I need it. Stay here and take care of the others.” He said loudly enough for everyone to hear before leaning closer and whispering, “Find out which one is doing this.”
She nodded at him and watched him walk away before turning to those left and saying, “Okay, everyone into the kitchen. It’s time to figure this out.”
The seven of them; Riko, Kate, Zane, Blane, Zoe, Sandrine, and Arun; all sat around the large dining table. For a long time no one spoke. They all just alternated between staring at each other and the television with the morbid poem.
Twelve naughty kittens all trapped on an island; they’re all going to die for certain.
The first betrayed love for cash; now she’s ash.
To violence and hate the second clung; now he’s hung.
To gossip the third fixated; now she’s been asphyxiated.
The fourth preferred those who were incapacitated, now it’s his turn to be penetrated.
The fifth was a jerk who loved a good burn, now in a ball of fire it’s his turn.
“Everyone who’s died did something the killer thought was bad,” Sandrine sounded annoyed.
“Seems a little disproportionate to have gossip and sexual assault on the same list. I mean I’ve made more than my share of people angry.” Zane wanted to be tough but Riko could hear the fear in his voice. “It’s not like crown attorneys make a lot of friends.”
“What the hell!” Arun jumped out of his seat and walked towards the far wall. The wall had a large chalk board surrounded by yellow orange wallpaper.
Following him to the chalkboard Riko asked, “What is it?”
“I swear I saw a blinking red light. Someone’s filming us.” Arun yelled as if he were trying to scare whoever was behind the chalkboard. “You’re setting us up and I’m going to find out why.”
“Arun, I didn’t see anything.”
The two of them stood in front of the chalkboard.
Just as Riko was turning around she saw a flicker of a red light. “Shut the curtains and turn off the lights.” A shiver ran through her as she continued to look at the blank black board.
The light was easily seen in the dark.
“What kind of bad horror movie bullshit is this?” Sandrine’s voice cracked in anger. Walking into the kitchen she came back with a large hammer used for tenderizing meat. Like all the kitchen utensils, it had a solid metal design.
“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Riko said as Sandrine started bashing at the chalkboard. The board splintered where she hit it and after three hard hits from someone who worked construction their entire adult life, it shattered.
The wall behind the chalk board was made of solid metal except for a small three centimetre hole that hid a small camera. Sandrine held up the camera and said, “I’ll find you and I’ll make sure you suffer for what you’ve done. You sick…” she continued with a long line of profanities that made Riko a little uncomfortable.
When she was done, Sandrine put the camera on a table and smashed it with her hammer.
Laughing awkwardly, Arun said, “This sort of reminds me of that party we had senior year.” When everyone looked at them blankly he explained, “It was the night before Kate…” he trailed off but they all knew he meant the night before Kate was hit by a drunk driver while jogging. “Anyway, remember we found that supper awkward kid—”
“Kingsley,” growled Sandrine.
Zoe’s parents had several hectares of land and she’d thrown a huge pre-graduation party. Everyone in their class had been invited. It was one of the few nights that Riko regretted. They’d all gotten drunk and she’d spent a good part of the night making out with Jonathan. Her chest felt tighter as she remembered he was dead.
While Riko only made out with Jonathan, others had done much worse. Some of the pairings that night destroyed relationships and started fights.
A girl in junior year had snuck in with a camcorder and recorded a lot before Sandrine found her. Sandrine had freaked out and thrown the camera into the fire. She’d yelled and said some terrible things to the girl before attacking her. It had taken three of them to pull Sandrine off of her.
“What ever happened to her?” Arun asked, voicing Riko’s thoughts.
“Who cares? That little snoop deserved worse than I gave her.” Sandrine’s voice was softer, but still filled with venom.
“Why is this wall metal?” Arun asked, leaning against the wall.
The silver necklace around Riko’s neck started to feel heavy. The small dolphin pendant her father had given her came out of her shirt and seemed to float towards the metal wall.
Kate’s wheelchair started stuttering towards the wall despite being locked in place. Everyone at the table got up as the silverware started rattling.
The metal hammer Sandrine had left on the table started to move towards the wall, scraping against the table.
Almost as if everything in the room decided to move at once. All the metal knick-knacks, the silverware, and pieces of the large chandelier took flight, moving as one large group towards the metal wall.
Both Riko and Sandrine dove, both for the hammer and to avoid the flying detritus. They missed the hammer and it took to the air, flying straight at Arun. He was pelted by several pieces of metal, forks embedded themselves into him, but it was the hammer that killed him; its head hit him in his neck and pinned him to the wall.
There was a sickening crack as the bulk of the metal pushed on him, crushing his body.
Riko felt her neck burn and the chain snapped off. It was just another pain combined with the multiple bruises and cuts caused by flying metal.
A large crack marked the end of the magnetic effect.
The cacophony of metal falling to the ground almost covered the sick wet thump of Arun’s crushed body falling lifelessly to the ground.
Last week, I received this anonymous question in Blush’s inbox:

While this could have been funny if it was from a friend, the fact that it remains anonymous sets off a seriously creepy vibe. I also feel disrespected and upset.
One of the reasons I created the game Blush is to open the conversation about sex. Make it less taboo to talk about, and to normalize conversations about topics that may seem, to some people, awkward and uncomfortable. Topics like LGBT and transgender issues will be less mysterious.
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown”
― H.P. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature
Sex, gender, and all the other topics that are covered in Blush should not be unknown! Maybe I’m extrapolating, but I feel like if people understood and respected one another a little bit better, we won’t have to live through another massacre like that in Orlando on June 12, 2016.
“[…]We lived through times when hate and fear seemed stronger;
We rise and fall and light from dying embers
Remembrances that hope and love last longer
And love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside. […]”
― Lin-Manuel Miranda at the 2016 Tony Awards
June 12 was our anniversary (seven years this year!), and I spent a lot of time on that day thinking about how privileged we are; to live in Canada, to be in a “socially accepted relationship”, to be alive, to be allowed to love. And yet, I receive messages like the one above. Granted, that message is TAME. I feel fortunate that whoever it was only went that far. But would they have said that over the phone? If I knew who they were? The internet allows a certain level of anonymity that makes people feel as though they can say whatever they want with no repercussions. Sure, this person won’t know how uncomfortable they made me feel (unless they read this), but that doesn’t mean that someone didn’t get hurt.
I hope that people treat each other with more respect soon. I hope that I’m bringing our daughter into a world that respects and loves and cares about all human life, no matter who they love, what they look like, or where they come from.
As for what I’m wearing right now? Clothing.
P.S. If one of my friends did send me that message as a joke, please let me know so that I can stop worrying about it! I won’t be mad at you.
Hello My Imaginary Friends,
Sometimes I forget my rule of not commenting on mean comments.
Someone commented on an ad for the Goat Story Mug on facebook and posted a video about how it was hipster crap.
I was mildly offended seeing as I’m really enjoying my mug. Yes, it’s a little hipster but it also really useful for a klutz like me. I’ve dropped more than my share of coffee cups with disastrous effects. I’ve dropped the Goat Mug several times now and it hasn’t even leaked. That’s pretty damn good for something that cost $25.
So of course the original poster’s reaction was to attack me and then his friend joined in. I think overall they called me fat, stupid, and compared me to a tv character I don’t know. It still hurt, despite being pretty lame. I was tempted to go all Cyrano on them but decided it was a bad idea.
If you really want to read it, it’s here. (Please don’t comment to defend me. They’re not worth it.)

It’s brought two things to mind. I wish Facebook had a way to declare that someone stole a photo. But more importantly it reminded me that it’s easy to hate.
I’m just as guilty as anyone else of making a comment about Nickleback or something else that’s easy to hate.
It’s fun to pick on something and feel superior. It’s an easy joke and an easy boost to our self-worth. It’s also hurtful and mean.
It’s a great way to cover insecurities or fear.
I don’t think I can talk about hate or fear this week without mentioning the Orlando Massacre.
It happened because of hate and hatefulness. Some say it’s a hate crime against the LGBTQ community and others say it’s a Terrorist attack against the US. It’s both. It’s also the act of a deeply deranged person who was filled with hate.
See, here’s the problem with hate, it eats at you and makes you the worst version of yourself. You hate and that makes you angry. The anger makes you hateful which makes those around you angry with or against you; either way it fuels the anger.
It’s easy to be angry and hateful. Much easier than trying to understand the loss, hurt, or pain. It’s easier to be consumed by hate than to be destroyed by sorrow.
Events like this are an opportunity for us to go towards hate or towards understanding. The true antithesis of hate is knowledge. When you can understand someone, you can at the very least feel some compassion.
When someone is being hateful and mean, it’s important to understand that it has more to do with them then it does you. That means that a lot of the hate you need to ignore. Get a hug from a friend or talk it out with someone who cares about you. 90% of the hate you won’t be able to change.
If it’s something you feel is important, however, then you need to talk about it. Know who you’re talking to and remember that not everyone is worth your time. Sometimes it’s better to cut the hate out of your life.
Take care,
Éric
An interesting combination of costumes at the Ottawa Geek Market back in April: the human muscular system and Attack on Titan’s Mikasa. It works for me, though!
Edited: the human muscular system is apparently a colossal titan from Attack on Titan. The more you know! Not such an unusual combination after all!

One of the first costumes we saw on the Friday of Ottawa Comic Con was this one, and did it ever start the weekend off right! She’s perfect!

Come out to CON Creative Ottawa Nerds tomorrow!! You are completely welcome to cosplay, and the crocheted TARDIS will be available for pictures. 😀
Hello My Imaginary Friends,
Saturday is one of my favourite events C.O.N – Craft Fair. I’m a little biased since my wife is one of the organizers, but I also love the feel of the event.
It’s a different crowd from bigger events and is very non-geek friendly. The exhibitors are always awesome and the crowds tend to stick around and chat.
If you have the chance, come by and check it out. The entry fee is low (adults $5 or two non perishables, kids are free) and all proceeds from it and the silent auction go to the Ottawa Food Bank.
For C.O.N. and by request of the Ottawa Browncoats, I have finally created a Firefly-themed coffee.
So come see us on Saturday and try Kaylee’s Coffee.

See you Saturday!
Éric
On Facebook yesterday, a lot of people were sharing an article about The Nook Cafe – a Harry Potter themed coffee shop. Being a huge fan of Harry Potter, I decided to write a bit about it today.

The Nook Cafe is in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and celebrated their one year anniversary yesterday, June 7. (Happy Anniversary!)
They are celebrating all week. If anyone reads this blog and happens to be in Manila, go check them out! But be prepared for a wait – if they’re packed on a regular day, I imagine that it will be even more so during this week!
I now have another reason to travel to the South Pacific!
If you’d like help booking this trip (or others!).Jen has retired from working as a travel agent. Hope you’ve enjoyed Fandom Travel.
Hello My Imaginary Friends,
Call me ridiculous, but I hate this time of year. June is one of the worst times for my allergies and the tail end of convention season. Put it all together and it leaves me feeling drained and lethargic.
I’ve had a supremely good 2016 so far and I’m not complaining, but if you see me and I look a little haggard or gruff it’s not you.
I’m sure you’re all wondering what’s going on in both my and Jen’s lives right now. So it’s update time.
Last I heard, the boxes had arrived and they were working on the extra questions for the game. I’m really proud of my wife and I can’t wait to see this game in person.
The final set of edits are done and we’re waiting on the lazy-no-good-layout-artist (me) to finish the layout before it gets double checked.
The big release party will be in October.
The book has been accepted by the publisher but needs a lot of work. We probably won’t start work on it until fall.
I’m midway through finishing the epilogue for Everdome. Then I’ll put it away for a while before trying to edit it.
I’m currently struggling with a way to expand our production and reach. I have developed a new flavour, but more on that on Thursday.
My role playing system has been playtested a lot in the past year. I’ve had a group of very patient and awesome gamers. The current playtest ends this month. I’ll then need to do a large edit of the document before getting it ready for submission.
Everything seems great with Baby Dragon. She’s growing and kicking (a lot). We’re sorting through all the amazing stuff people have given us. (Seriously our friends and family are the best!)
We’ll start truly planning her room in July.
I’m both excited to meet her and nervous at the same time.
We’ll that’s about it for now.
Later days!
Éric
I (Jen) wasn’t at Geek Market on the Saturday because of exams and pregnancy, so many of these pictures are a complete surprise to me. This is one of them – I actually squeaked with excitement when I opened it to edit it today. Honey Lemon and Baymax!! So perfect!
