A review of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

RoTFThis Canada Day it was supposed to rain so my Wife and I decided to catch up on our cinema time.

I like the first Transformers, it was easy to watch and pretty entertaining. It was a typical summer blockbuster. The second one accomplished the same thing despite having a few pacing issues.

Short Version: If you enjoyed the first one and can turn your brain off while giant robots beat each other to death, than you’ll enjoy RoTF

Updated Summer Movie Rankings

Seeing last night means I’m UPdating my Summer Movie Rankings. Both Up and Star Trek have the same numerical score and both brought me to tears at least once but I gave the first spot to Star Trek for sentimental reasons.

Without further ado my summer rankings are:

1. Star Trek (9.5)
2. Up (9.5)
3. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (7.5)
4. X-Men Wolverine (6.5)
5. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (5)

Idea stolen from Howard Tayler of Schlock Mercenary.

A review of Pixar’s Up

up-posterI was lucky enough to see Pixar’s Up last night and two things came to mind. First, I hate seeing movies on Saturday Nights, opening night people really want to see the movie weekend afternoons people are there to relax but Friday/Saturday night is the night that people who have nothing better to do go to the movies. The couple next to me looked like they were ready for a nightclub or porno movie and complained the whole time they were there.

The second thought that came to mind was how amazingly well written the movie was. More after the cut:

Short Version: If you like movies with an intelligent and fun story go see Pixar’s Up.

A Review of Star Trek (2009)

star_trek_movie_poster_imaxIn my family Star Trek has been a tradition as long as I can remember. I’ve seen all the movies in theaters with my mom and brother since the Voyage home in 1986. I’ve read the James Blish Novelizations of the Original Series and Watched most of the episodes. I’ve seen every episode of TNG, DS9, and Voyager. I did miss season 3 but that will be rectified someday.

I went through 3 major phases as a kid, Dinosaurs, Star Trek, and Robots. I might have moved on from pure and total obsession but boy do I still love the universe. It might be because I have so many great memories of watching TNG with my family all comfy on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn or it could be the hopeful vision of the future either way I love Star Trek.

Sadly my Mom couldn’t be with us last Thursday when we went to see Star Trek but she was with us in heart. I know she would have loved it. I did however bring my Fiancée who had never seen anything but the Trouble with Tribbles. She loved it and I think she’ll be into watching the new Blu-ray release with me. We went back on Sunday and here’s my review.

Short Version: Amazing it was truly a good Star Trek movie.   Longer version after the cut.
