Everyone but Riko ran back to the relative safety of the hotel. She just stood there, her tears merging with the torrential flow of rain over her body. The lightning danced over Lake Ontario and each set of thunder mimicked her heartache.

One of the flashes of light was reflected by something on the beach near her. She walked towards in zombie-like in her grief. She’d crossed the beach before she realized how stupid she’d been. There was no way to tell if the killer had placed more mines.

When she found what was reflecting, she gagged and sobbed simultaneously. It was Ethan’s father’s watch. Cracked down the middle and stopped at the time of his death. The watch was still attached to his arm. She assumed it was his arm. It was burnt beyond recognition and not attached to the rest of his body.

There were various other body parts strewn, as if by a careless child, all over the beach. Her first instinct was to collect all the pieces. She didn’t. Instead she turned around and walked towards the hotel in the same fugue like state as she’d walked onto the beach.

His dying words to her were that he loved her. She hadn’t known. She’d loved him since they’d been paired together two years ago.

The others had congregated in the ballroom. When she walked in, Zoe went over to her and gave her a towel. She was shaking but she wasn’t sure if it was the cold or the trauma.

“Sit down… I’ll get you a hot chocolate,” Zoe rushed out of the room.

Riko guessed they’d gotten over their fear of being poisoned and let out a little giggle. They all looked around awkwardly, none of them meeting her eyes. Curiosity pulled her from her grief and she asked, “What’s up?”

“Sandrine has a theory but you’re not going to like it…” Zane looked almost guilty.

“We have enough of the killer playing games… what’s your theory?”

All their phones started ringing and the screens around the ballroom roared to life. The showed the growing, gruesome, and irritatingly vague poem:

Twelve naughty kittens all trapped on an island; they’re all going to die for certain.
The first betrayed love for cash; now she’s ash.
To violence and hate the second clung; now he’s hung.
To gossip the third fixated; now she’s been asphyxiated.
The fourth preferred those who were incapacitated, now it’s his turn to be penetrated.
The fifth was a jerk who loved a good burn, now in a ball of fire it’s his turn.
The sixth was a model citizen, a spy; and not Canadian but Russian.
The seventh wasn’t what he seemed; he was but a dream within a dream.

“That was written by someone who doesn’t understand poetry, or truly hates it.” Zoe said it, probably intending it to be a joke.

“Sandrine, what’s your theory?” Riko asked. She didn’t want anyone else to die and she didn’t want to die. Her survival instinct was paired with a pang of guilt, should she really be thinking about this sort of thing when so many others had died? Shouldn’t she be in a state of shock longer? She pushed away those feelings and concentrated on trying to save everyone.

“I don’t think he’s dead!”

“What?”

“Ethan… I think he faked his death.”

“Why?”

“The poem says ‘Twelve Naughty Kittens’ but we were thirteen. That means one of us isn’t part of this or one of us is the killer.”

“Ok, but why Ethan?” Riko tried to hide the defensiveness in her voice.

“As a cop he has the training, he wasn’t always with the group, and there’s no way to make sure he died.”

“I saw his body. At least parts of it. His arm was still wearing the watch his father gave him…”

“It still makes sense to me that it’s him. I can’t imagine anyone in this room could do it; it has to be someone who faked their death. Ethan was the only one who wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Zoe sighed and said, “It can’t be Kate, unless she’s faking her paralysis. The boathouse isn’t accessible. I can’t believe you’re behind it.” She pointed at Riko.

Kate nodded. “And let’s be real. There’s no way in hell Zane and Blane would kill everyone. This is way too tacky for them. Same with Zoe.”

They all looked at Sandrine who lifted her hands up and said, “Hey. If I wanted you dead, I wouldn’t go through all this trouble. There’s also no money to be made here. It makes no sense.”

“Jonathan died so far at sea that we couldn’t see him,” Zoe said, her face paler than normal. “What about him?”

“Maybe,” Sandrine said. “I don’t think it’s Arun. We saw him die.”

“We didn’t see Abe die but it would be hard to fake. Maybe Alison?” suggested Zoe, moving a cup towards Riko.

Riko reached out and took the cup that Zoe had been holding in front of her and took a drink. It was mostly liqueur with a little hot chocolate. It made her feel warmer inside. She said, “I don’t think it’s Abe. That would be too hard to fake.”

“Bodies!” exclaimed Blane. “The bodies.” He looked around like everyone was being dumb. “We can eliminate anyone who’s still dead upstairs.”

In an almost choreographed movement, the six moved towards the stairs and elevator.

Stopping in front of the elevator, Kate shrugged. There was no other way for her to get up to the first floor in her wheelchair.

“We’ll go up with her,” offered Zane despite Blane’s horrified look.

Sandrine, Zoe, and Riko walked up the stairs. Riko took comfort in the warmth of her drink. She was still wet. The hotel seemed even more eerie, if possible, than it had before.

They reached the door to the makeshift morgue and Riko opened it. A blast of icy air flowed from the room making her shiver. She fumbled for the lights.

The room was pristine, not only were there no bodies but there was no smell, and the room had been made up perfectly.

“This is the right room… Right?” asked Zoe, the familiar sound of panic entering her voice.

Blane and Zane both swore at the same moment, Zoe started to softly weep, Sandrine and Riko just stared at Arun’s body.

“This place is booby-trapped. That’s bullshit!” Zane voice held a small amount of panic but by this time they’d all seen so much death it was starting to feel natural.

Riko was numb. The reassurance she’d been clinging to, that they would be rescued soon, faded and she was starting to wonder if they’d survive. The feeling of impending death didn’t fill her with fear, just a sense of loss. She’d spent her entire life trying to help people but now she was completely helpless. Who would hate them so much that they’d torture them? Who could be this hateful? Who could be so crazy?

“It was me!” Sandrine yelled and collapsed to the floor, sobbing.

“What?” asked Riko.

“I hit Kate. I was so angry and…” Sandrine drifted off still sobbing.

Rolling over to Sandrine, Kate put her hand on her and said, “It’s ok, Kate. You didn’t do it. Jonathan came to me a few years ago and told me everything.”

“He what?”

“Yeah he told me he woke up drunk in his car after the party with a dent in the front. He said he drove into me when he was so drunk he couldn’t remember.”

“That’s not what happened…” Sandrine took a deep breath. “I took his keys while he was asleep and I drove off. I was just so angry and stupid. That little snoop Kingsley had caught Arun and I…” She drifted off.

Zoe looked over and said, “But that was the night he gave me the promise ring. You Bitch!” Zane and Blane held her in place as she yelled at Sandrine.

“I know that’s why I was so pissed. I didn’t want anyone finding out.”

“You were so angry you drove someone else’s car? While drunk?” Kate didn’t sound angry, she sounded disbelieving.

Nodding, Sandrine looked up at Kate and said, “I’m sorry.”

“You’re an idiot. Why the hell are you telling me now?” Kate gave a bemused smile.

“We’re all going to die.” Sandrine giggled a little. The fear and barely controlled hysteria behind the giggle spoke to how Riko was feeling.

“Look at me Kate. I’ve fought with my body, society, and gravity since the accident. I’m not saying it’s been easy, but I refuse to let it end here like this. We need to figure out if it’s one of us or if it’s someone else, find the person and beat the shit out of them. Ok?”

Sniffing, Sandrine replied, “I’d like to beat someone up.”

“There’s the badass I know. Now, who do you think is doing this?” Kate looked at Riko. The authority in Kate’s voice snapped her out of her self-pity.

“I think it’s Allison. She has the tech knowledge and the body we assume is her is too burned to be sure.”

“That’s a good theory. Any other ideas?” Kate took over the group in the same way she’d taken over all group projects or sports teams, with confidence and determination.

“It’s Ethan…” Zoe’s eyes were still filled with tears and she spoke looking at Arun’s corpse.

“Why?” asked Kate.

“He’s the only plus one who came. All the others conveniently couldn’t make it. He’s not one of us and he creeps me out.”

Kate nodded and asked, “Riko, did anything come up for Ethan?”

“Yeah, he told me he had been offered a special assignment.”

“Why didn’t he take it?” asked Kate.

Zane rolled his eyes and said, “Isn’t it obvious? The boy is madly in love with her and she with him.”

Everyone looked at Riko and she blushed not knowing what to say.

They threw around a few more suggestions including Kingsley, the girl who’d tried to film them at the party, but nothing concrete presented itself. Zane and Riko brought Arun’s body up to the makeshift morgue while the group argued it was a government experiment.

They were on their way back when they heard yelling from outside. They ran down the stairs towards the beach. Standing in the sand in only his underwear and wristwatch, a gunmetal timepiece that had belonged to his father, was Ethan.

The sun was setting over the island and the sky was on fire with red and purple. The air was crisp and smelled of salt water. Riko couldn’t help but think how beautiful the island would be if it hadn’t been one large tomb.

“Stay off the beach!” He was yelling at Blane, Zane, and Sandrine that looked like the wanted to run to him but everyone seemed frozen in place.

It took Riko a few moments before she realized why no one was moving forward. There was a glint of silver metal under Ethan’s foot and even at twenty or so metres away she knew what it was.

“Ethan,” She gasped before saying, “Let me try and help.” She’d taken basic bomb training.

“NO!” Ethan shouted. “I know you have some training but this beach is littered with other landmines.”

“I have to do something.” A strong breeze blew at her suddenly and the overwhelming smells of ozone and petrichor assaulted her nose.

“There’s nothing you can do for me, I’m already dead.” His words caused her chest to become tighter. “but promise you’ll catch the bastard and make them pay for this.”

“I love you.” Her words were barely a whisper so she repeated them. “I love you, Ethan.”

Smiling he replied, “I love you too,” as he stepped off the landmine.

“No!” she yelled as a loud explosion rocked the quiet of the evening and a ball of fiery energy engulfed Ethan. She ran forward but was held back by several sets of hands.

A second loud crack assaulted her ears and it started to rain hard.

The boat was engulfed in flames and all they could do is watch.

“It’s not sinking. I’m going to swim it,” Ethan said moving for the shore.

“Don’t be stupid. That’s too far away.” Arun sounded like he was in shock, his words were monotone and said without emphasis.

“If he was thrown clear, I have to make sure he doesn’t drown.” Ethan made it clear that he was going.

“That’s really far…” Zoe didn’t sound convinced Ethan could make it.

“I’ve been swimming my whole life. I competed before becoming a cop. I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll go with you.” Riko hated water, but was starting to hate this island even more. She moved to follow him and he pulled her into a hug. He was warm despite the coolness and she felt better while he held her.

“I’ll be fine. I’ll take a life jacket in case I need it. Stay here and take care of the others.” He said loudly enough for everyone to hear before leaning closer and whispering, “Find out which one is doing this.”

She nodded at him and watched him walk away before turning to those left and saying, “Okay, everyone into the kitchen. It’s time to figure this out.”

The seven of them; Riko, Kate, Zane, Blane, Zoe, Sandrine, and Arun; all sat around the large dining table. For a long time no one spoke. They all just alternated between staring at each other and the television with the morbid poem.

“Everyone who’s died did something the killer thought was bad,” Sandrine sounded annoyed.

“Seems a little disproportionate to have gossip and sexual assault on the same list. I mean I’ve made more than my share of people angry.” Zane wanted to be tough but Riko could hear the fear in his voice. “It’s not like crown attorneys make a lot of friends.”

“What the hell!” Arun jumped out of his seat and walked towards the far wall. The wall had a large chalk board surrounded by yellow orange wallpaper.

Following him to the chalkboard Riko asked, “What is it?”

“I swear I saw a blinking red light. Someone’s filming us.” Arun yelled as if he were trying to scare whoever was behind the chalkboard. “You’re setting us up and I’m going to find out why.”

“Arun, I didn’t see anything.”

The two of them stood in front of the chalkboard.

Just as Riko was turning around she saw a flicker of a red light. “Shut the curtains and turn off the lights.” A shiver ran through her as she continued to look at the blank black board.

The light was easily seen in the dark.

“What kind of bad horror movie bullshit is this?” Sandrine’s voice cracked in anger. Walking into the kitchen she came back with a large hammer used for tenderizing meat. Like all the kitchen utensils, it had a solid metal design.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Riko said as Sandrine started bashing at the chalkboard. The board splintered where she hit it and after three hard hits from someone who worked construction their entire adult life, it shattered.

The wall behind the chalk board was made of solid metal except for a small three centimetre hole that hid a small camera. Sandrine held up the camera and said, “I’ll find you and I’ll make sure you suffer for what you’ve done. You sick…” she continued with a long line of profanities that made Riko a little uncomfortable.

When she was done, Sandrine put the camera on a table and smashed it with her hammer.

Laughing awkwardly, Arun said, “This sort of reminds me of that party we had senior year.” When everyone looked at them blankly he explained, “It was the night before Kate…” he trailed off but they all knew he meant the night before Kate was hit by a drunk driver while jogging. “Anyway, remember we found that supper awkward kid—”

“Kingsley,” growled Sandrine.

Zoe’s parents had several hectares of land and she’d thrown a huge pre-graduation party. Everyone in their class had been invited. It was one of the few nights that Riko regretted. They’d all gotten drunk and she’d spent a good part of the night making out with Jonathan. Her chest felt tighter as she remembered he was dead.

While Riko only made out with Jonathan, others had done much worse. Some of the pairings that night destroyed relationships and started fights.

A girl in junior year had snuck in with a camcorder and recorded a lot before Sandrine found her. Sandrine had freaked out and thrown the camera into the fire. She’d yelled and said some terrible things to the girl before attacking her. It had taken three of them to pull Sandrine off of her.

“What ever happened to her?” Arun asked, voicing Riko’s thoughts.

“Who cares? That little snoop deserved worse than I gave her.” Sandrine’s voice was softer, but still filled with venom.

“Why is this wall metal?” Arun asked, leaning against the wall.

The silver necklace around Riko’s neck started to feel heavy. The small dolphin pendant her father had given her came out of her shirt and seemed to float towards the metal wall.

Kate’s wheelchair started stuttering towards the wall despite being locked in place. Everyone at the table got up as the silverware started rattling.

The metal hammer Sandrine had left on the table started to move towards the wall, scraping against the table.

Almost as if everything in the room decided to move at once. All the metal knick-knacks, the silverware, and pieces of the large chandelier took flight, moving as one large group towards the metal wall.

Both Riko and Sandrine dove, both for the hammer and to avoid the flying detritus. They missed the hammer and it took to the air, flying straight at Arun. He was pelted by several pieces of metal, forks embedded themselves into him, but it was the hammer that killed him; its head hit him in his neck and pinned him to the wall.

There was a sickening crack as the bulk of the metal pushed on him, crushing his body.

Riko felt her neck burn and the chain snapped off. It was just another pain combined with the multiple bruises and cuts caused by flying metal.

A large crack marked the end of the magnetic effect.

The cacophony of metal falling to the ground almost covered the sick wet thump of Arun’s crushed body falling lifelessly to the ground.

“Holy Shit that’s gruesome!” Zane’s voice cracked.

“Okay. That’s it. I’m out. I’m going to the boathouse and see if there’s a boat for us.” Blane sounded almost as panicked as Zane.

Riko’s first instinct was to make sure everyone was together. The killer would have a harder time getting them if they were in a group. She knew it wasn’t true. Missy died while they all watched a tv screen.

“That sounds like a good plan,” Riko told them.

“No it’s a terrible plan,” Sandrine said through her sobbing. “If we split up we’re dead… dead!”

Trying to sooth her, Riko whispered, “If we can get off, we’ll be away from this killer.”

The two men nodded and walked back into their rooms to get dressed. Not wanting to deal with the mess that was Abe, Riko closed the door. She moved towards Ethan’s room, to tell him what happened and Sandrine followed her wordlessly.

It was strange to have someone like Sandrine be in shock from a murder. From what Riko had read she’d been implicated in more than her fair share of deaths. Maybe she was faking? If she was, she was a really good actor.

She knocked on Ethan’s door and held her breath as she waited for him. He came to the door looking groggy. He was only in his underwear, and his naked torso made Riko blush. He wasn’t built like a body builder, but he was toned and in great shape.

Seeing her face he said, “Who?” She told him about Abe and how Sandrine had found him. He shook his head and replied, “I’ll be right back.”

While they waited, Riko changed into a pair of comfortable jeans and an Ottawa Police Service baseball tee-shirt. In high school she’d played a little baseball, so when she joined the force she was happy they had a team. The team mostly played against other emergency services and it was all just for fun, but she took pride in the fact that they’d won.

“Cute.” Sandrine’s tone was half admiring, half sarcastic. She must have been feeling better.

Ethan came back out and smirked at Riko. “Ok, let’s get some breakfast.”

“How can you think of food?” Sandrine looked annoyed.

“We’ll all think and survive better if our blood sugar is regulated.” Ethan glared at her, daring her to say anything.

The cafeteria was just as they’d left it the light before. Zoe and Kate were sitting together in the far corner eating canned fruit straight from the cans.

“I saw eggs, bacon, ham, cereal, and a whole lot of fresh fruit yesterday. Why are you eating that?” asked Sandrine.

“It’s the hardest thing to tamper with. I’m not eating bacon soaked in arsenic or fruit with razor blades in it.” Kate’s voice was steady but Riko could hear the note of panic hiding behind her logic.

“That’s a good point,” Ethan said, surprising her. “I know it sounds totally paranoid but we have no idea what this crazy person wants from us or to do to us. Poisoning the food makes sense.”

“I don’t like it,”Riko grumbled and made her way to the kitchen. In the fridge, pantry, and everywhere else she looked she saw ways to die. “Even the coffee could be ruined,” she muttered starring at her favourite brand of coffee. “and they have mint chocolate chip coffee.”

She reached into the pantry for a can of peaches when she heard Sandrine swear and punch the wall. “I will not live in a state of terror,” Sandrine growled and for the first time since last night, Riko saw some of the fire and anger that had made the other girl the school’s most feared bully.

“My cousin owns a restaurant, smell and taste everything a tiny bit. If it tastes off don’t eat it. Riko give me a hand.” Sandrine started piling all the dishes, including the reusable coffee filters, into the industrial sized dishwasher. “These things heat hot enough to melt the flesh off a turkey. They’ll kill anything that some psycho would put on the dishes.”

Sandrine barked orders at Ethan and Riko as if they were kitchen hands in a reality TV cooking show. Before they knew it they had a big hearty breakfast on the table. The smell of bacon enticed Kate and Zoe over and after Sandrine ate a few pieces of everything, they all tucked in for a big breakfast.

Despite, or possibly because of, the trauma of the past few days they all ate more than they’d normally consider. When the meal was over Sandrine said, “It’s going to take more than a few terror tactics and bad booby-traps to kill me.” She said it with bluster but then cringed. Everyone was silent for a moment expecting something to happen. When nothing did they all laughed a little.

“Riko, you’ve got to stop him,” Arun shouted as he ran into the dining room.

Everyone jumped. “What’s wrong?”

“Jonathan, Zane, Blane, and I were trying to get the old boat we found in the boat house working,” Arun panted. “We had it running when Jonathan found a flare gun and threatened to shoot if we didn’t get off the boat.”

Everyone got up and ran as fast as their full stomachs would allow them.

They got close to the boathouse in time to see an old fishing boat pull out. Jonathan’s laugher could barely be heard over the thrum of the engine.

From a distance Riko could see Zane and Blane on the dock looking downtrodden.

They all watched as the boat grew smaller and more distant. “Maybe he’ll tell people where we are,” suggested Ethan. Almost perfectly timed with his words, they all got a text message. As they pulled out their phones, the boat exploded.

The fifth was a jerk who loved a good burn, now in a ball of fire it’s his turn

“Well I’m going to have another of these,” Jonathan slurred picking up a full bottle of gyn.

The rest of the group just sort of stared at him for a little until Zoe launched herself at him. “You killed her you bastard.” Arun jumped into action and grabbed Zoe before she reached Jonathan.

Falling backwards off his chair, Jonathan made a whimpering noise.

“Ok. Relax everyone. Someone has obviously staged this. We can’t even be sure that’s Allison.” Riko tried to sound calm despite the panic she felt. “If one of us is the murderer, we just have to stop them from killing until the boat comes in the morning.”

“So we should just lock ourselves in our rooms and wait it out?” Zane clung to Blane.

Nodding solemnly, Abe said, “Right. You should lock yourselves in your rooms while the detectives and I investigate.” The doctor looked like he was half in shock and half enjoying himself.

“Weren’t you totally into these kinds of movies?” Sandrine was standing like she expected to be attacked, and in her dress it was easy to see the strong muscles of her legs and arms. She owned a construction company and must still do some of the work. The teasing, judgmental tone of her voice hadn’t changed in the past ten years.

Either Abe didn’t realize she was accusing him or he ignored it. “No way. I hate psycho killers. I’m all about monsters. Dracula, Jeepers Creepers, Nightmare on Elm Street.”

“I’d feel safer if I was with someone who has a gun,” slurred Jonathan.

With hatred in her eyes, Zoe said, “I’d feel more comfortable if you were with someone who has a gun too.” Turning to Riko and Ethan, she asked, “You have guns right?”

“No,” Ethan said and shook his head. Riko knew he was lying. The group was too frazzled; adding guns to the mix would guarantee that someone would get shot and it probably wouldn’t be the killer. “We’re off duty. No gun.” He said it as if it was obvious. She nodded in agreement.

“So we’re on an island with a psycho killer and no guns. Okay then.” Jonathan took a great big drink of the already half empty bottle of gin.

“Abe is right. Everyone should go to your rooms, lock the doors and stay there until the morning.”

Slowly everyone went up to their rooms. When no one but Riko, Ethan, and Abe were left, they carried Missy’s body up to the makeshift morgue. When they’d placed the body next to the others, Abe turned the air conditioning on to maximum.

“It’ll hopefully preserve the bodies a little.” He shrugged. The room already smelled of death and bodily fluids.

In Ethan’s room, Abe asked, “Which one of them do you think the killer is?”

“Why do you think it’s not one of us?” asked Ethan with a smirk. Riko’s heart fluttered at the smirk.

Looking like he was solving a puzzle no one else could, Abe answered, “Riko has always been the most stand up person I know. If she kills someone, it’s because they were a really bad person. If she trusts you enough to be your partner, it can’t be you either.”

Despite it feeling like a back handed compliment, Riko liked that her former classmate saw her as incorruptible. She said, “I’m not sure who it could be. I mean Jonathan is a broken jackass. I’m sure Sandrine is capable of killing, but I don’t think she’d play these games.”

Shrugging, Ethan said, “I haven’t seen anything to make me suspect anyone, but whoever this is, they’ve put a lot of thought into what they’re doing.”

They talked a little more about the others, but nothing came to mind. With no cell signal on the island and no access to the WiFi, they had no way of contacting the outside world. They finally decided to get some sleep.

“We’ll walk you to your room,” said Ethan. Every corner and every shadow made Riko’s skin crawl. She felt like she was playing a survival horror video game. Any moment she expected a zombie to crash through a window.

Despite her nerves, they walked Abe to his room and nothing happened. They said their goodnights and headed back to Riko’s room.

Ethan went for the adjoining door, turned, and said, “Goodnight.” His smile was tired but warm. She wanted to tell him to stay. She wanted to feel his arms around her, his warmth on her back as she slept. She wanted him.

“Goodnight,” she replied as he closed the door, her moment passed.

She changed out of her dress and into a comfortable pair of shorts and a Superman tank top. She wasn’t expecting to fall asleep, but the stress and worry had worn her out.

She woke up to an alarm. She hit the alarm clock next to the bed but nothing happened.

The sun shone meekly through the hotels curtains signaling a beautiful day was about to start. The smell and sound of Lake Ontario wafted through the window. She must have forgotten to close it last night.

The alarm was her phone. She had a text message. It was from a blocked number, and all it said was, “The forth preferred those who were incapacitated, now it’s his turn to be penetrated.

There was a scream from the hallway and she ran out to find Sandrine standing in the doorway of Abe’s room. She was ashen with shock, and didn’t stop screaming until Riko pulled her into a hug.

Over the shoulder of the shocked woman, Riko could see Abe’s body hung on the wall by a six foot square patch of spikes. It looked like someone had pushed or tossed him into the spikes.

Wargrave Island (Serial Story) Part 3

List of Characters | Part 1| Part 2

They had just placed James’s body in the same room as the burnt canoe when all three of their phones rang.

Riko brushed her short black hair behind her ear and looked down at the screen incredulously

“Allison R has invited you to a LiveStream on Konect-EDTM” read her screen.

“What the hell? I thought she was dead?” Doctor Abe Harker gave a confused glance at the canoe.

“How’d she get my number? Wait… I don’t have signal. What the hell?” asked Ethan. He’d clicked on ok and Riko could see a countdown clock with fifteen minutes left.

Riko put her phone away and said, “If we got this, everyone else will have too. We should go before they panic.”

“Screw them, I’m panicking already,” Abe trembled as he spoke.

On the way to the staircase, they didn’t trust the elevator, they met up with Zane and Blane. “Riko!” they exclaimed in unison and pulled her into a group hug. The two had been inseparable in high school and they’d been teased mercilessly; called every form of homophobic insult until Zane came out. The teasing transformed into whispers and rumour. Despite everything, Blane had stayed firm in his friendship with Zane. In senior year they’d announced they were a couple. The whispers turned into bullying. Riko had been enraged by the way they were treated and had gotten into multiple fights before they’d asked her to just ignore it. When the two were married, a few years later, she’d been part of the wedding party.

“I know that look. What’s wrong?” Zane’s sharp nose and bright eyes looked down on her after the hug.

“James is dead and someone else was killed.” Riko was blunt but it was the best way.

“Good riddance. Who’s the ‘someone else’?” Blane’s sandy blond hair contrasted with his naturally tanned skinned and dark eyes.

“We thought it was Allison but…” Abe lifted his phone with the countdown on it and shrugged.

They walked the rest of the way to the ballroom without speaking.

When they arrived the whole group was there except for Jonathan.

“He went to the kitchen. Said he needed some ‘grub’. He’s really stuck in the past.” Zoe made air quotes around the word “grub”.

“That man is completely useless,” Missy enunciated clearly as if she was in parliament. “Screw him, What about this?” She held up her phone with a little over five minutes left in the countdown. Behind her well controlled disgust, she was barely hiding her panic.

Calmly Riko said, “Let’s all head to the kitchen together and we’ll take the call there.” As the ten of them walked across the lobby to the small attached dining room and kitchen Riko expected to see Jonathan dead. To her mixed relief and annoyance he was sitting on a stool in the dining room watching a large screen with the same countdown as their phones. He was munching down on a large bag of chips.

“Oh, hey guys. Looks like Teacher’s pet is still alive.” Jonathan used Allison’s high school nick name. He’d given it to her personally when she’d rejected him in junior year. He then started a rumour she’d been having an affair with their computers teacher, Mr. Trevors. He’d been straight out of teachers college.

Riko was embarrassed to remember that she’d believed the rumours. She wasn’t alone and they spread to the teachers and the parents. Mr. Trevors was fired for the affair despite both him and Allison saying it didn’t exist.

On the table next to Jonathan was a big bowl with ice, a dozen glasses, and a variety of drinks, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic.

Ethan reached over and prepared himself a drink of rum and coke on the rocks. Seeing Riko watching him he said, “What? We’re not on duty.” He said it with a smirk that made her insides tingle.

Taking their cue from him, they all fixed themselves drinks of one sort or the other in the glasses. Riko took a bottle of water and just held on to it.

“This better be good,” Missy mumbled. Sitting at the far end of the table she filled her glass with ice and poured a bottle of water over it. She looked ready for a tough business meeting at the end of the table in a comfy chair.

When the countdown ended, they were all sipping their drinks quietly. Allison’s face with a background of books, as if she were in a library, appeared on the screen. She hadn’t changed at all from high school. “If you’re getting this I’m most likely dead.” Everyone started talking at once, but quieted down when Allison continued, “The good news is one of you is my killer. The bad news is you’re trapped here.” Allison looked up, as if she was looking at something beyond the camera and asked, “Is that ok?”

The video cut to a blank screen and a computerized voice started saying, “Twelve naughty kittens all trapped on an island. They’re all going to die for certain. The first betrayed love for cash; now she’s ash. To violence and hate the second clung; now he’s hung.” The words appeared and stayed on the screens.

“That’s twisted,” laughed Jonathan.

“Oh shit. We’re all going to die,” Zoe fell from her chair and started hyperventilating. “We’re going to die, we’re going to die.” She kept repeating the words and Abe went to her to help with the panic attack.

Ethan moved closer to Riko and gave her a solemn look. Zane took her hand. If someone was really trying to kill them they needed to find out who it was. Riko wouldn’t put murder past most of them, unfortunately, but this was one step beyond. It was scarily premeditated.

Looking up at the screen again Riko noticed that another line had been added.

Twelve naughty kittens all trapped on an island; they’re all going to die for certain.
The first betrayed love for cash; now she’s ash.
To violence and hate the second clung; now he’s hung
To gossip the third fixated; now she’s been asphyxiated.

The only other person still looking at the screen was Missy. Riko recognized the signs of anaphylaxis; Missy’s skin was puffy and eyes bloodshot. Missy’s throat had closed and she’d suffocated while everyone had been fixated on Zoe.

Her dead eyes still stared at the screen with terror.

Wargrave Island (Serial Story) Part 2

List of Characters | Part 1

After Riko and Ethan put out the fire in the canoe there was little left to identify the body.

“Everyone get inside and let Riko do her job.” Zoe’s voice was shrill and betrayed how close to panic she was. Thankfully the crowd listened and started moving towards the hotel.

The exception was Abe, who was holding his cellphone as a flashlight. “I can help,” he said. When Riko gave him a questioning look he added, “I’m a doctor now.”

Both Ethan and Riko had trained with forensics, but not enough to compete with a doctor. Abe looked at the body and reached out for it. He stopped himself before touching the body. “I can’t tell anything in this light. We’ll have to bring it into the hotel.”

“It’s ok doc,” Ethan said, moving to the back of the canoe. “We’ll have forensics here in the morning. We’ll use one of the empty rooms to put the whole canoe.”

They took some pictures for evidence and carried the boat into the hotel. The music had been turned off and the only sounds were the faint hum of the florescent lights.

Taking the elevator was impossible; the boat was too big. Riko was happy they had taken the stairs once she smelled the body. It smelled of burnt flesh and hair. All three of them where gagging as they exited the empty room.

Riko dialed 911 on her cellphone as they walked back to the lobby. It didn’t connect. The phone said she had full bars but she couldn’t call out. “I’m not getting through. Can you?” she asked Ethan.

He creased his brow in concentration as he tapped the phone. She knew he hated using it. “Not getting anything.” Shaking his head, he added, “I’ll look at reception.”

They left Ethan at reception and headed to the dance hall. It was quiet and those in it seemed mostly sullen or scared. Jonathan had a glass of something amber and was nursing it in the corner near the bar. Someone had turned off the music.

When the three of them walking into the room, everyone turned and stood up. Someone asked, “Who was it?”

“We’re not sure who was in the boat. The body was too badly burned. Is anyone’s cell able to call out?”

“Nope,” slurred Jonathan, “Wifi’s down too. It’s like 1996 in here.” His laughter bordered hysterical.

“Does anyone have a satellite phone?” It was a long shot and everyone shook their head. “Ok, who’s here and who’s missing?”

Zoe stood up straighter and started pointing people out, “Well there’s Jonny, me, Abe, Arun, you, we all came on the second boat. Then there’s Sandrine, Missy, and Kate. They were on the first boat with Zane, Blane, and James.” Sandrine, Missy and Kate were in the room but the other three weren’t.

“What about Allison?” Sandrine asked. She had barely changed since the last time Riko had seen her; all scorn and muscle. She and James had been an unstoppable bully team in high school. Riko shuddered at the memories. They’d loved calling her stupid names like Flied Lice, Eggroll, and Riko the Hun.

“No one’s seen her. Right?” asked the Zoe. Riko was starting to suspect that the woman’s perkiness increased with stress. “Oh my god, she must be the body!” Zoe looked ready to faint or do a somersault, it was hard to tell.

“There’s no way to know that for sure. There’s still the plus ones right?” Riko looked around the room and was shocked to see everyone shake their heads. “No one brought someone?”

“My husband’s with the kids, our babysitter cancelled at the last minute,” Kate smiled apologetically. She’d been their class’s star athlete until a drunk driver had hit her while she was jogging in their senior year. Riko reconnected with the feisty redhead when her sister had needed a wedding planner. She and Riko had been training together for marathons.

Looking anxiously from her phone to Riko, Missy said, “I was going to bring my sister; she had a big crush on Arun, but she had to work at the last minute.” The nervous glances at her phone told Riko that Missy didn’t like being off the grid. She’d seen Missy on the news a few times, especially during the elections. Missy had run and won in their old riding for the provincial conservative party.

All their stories were similar. Each of those that had planned to bring someone, that person had canceled at the last minute.

Sighing at the odd coincidence, Riko tried to be as calm as possible as she said, “There are four people missing. I’m going to wait until my partner gets back and then we’re going to search the hotel to find them.” She wished the hotel had staff instead of being a giant rental. The idea behind the hotel was complete privacy. It was self-contained and fully stocked. When rented, the client could bring their own staff or not. It looked like Allison had decided not.

“Riko,” Ethan didn’t look happy as he walked it. Whispering he said, “All the phones are voice over IP and not working.” She’d guessed that, it wasn’t easy getting a landline to an island.

He gulped and she knew there was something else going on. “What?” she asked a little too impatiently.

“I found another body,” he said it too loud and Zoe screamed.

“Abe come with us, everyone else stay here,” she ordered.

Ethan pointed inside the elevator and once again the three of them were staring at a dead body. It was James; although he’d lost a lot of weight, his beady brown eyes were the same. He’d been hung with a long USB cable.

Sick and Serial Story

Hello Imaginary Friends,

I’ve been fighting a virus for the past few weeks. At least I think it’s a virus. I feel much better now but I’m still weak, ache-y, tired, and easily distracted.

I’m really hoping it’s a combination of sickness and allergies and not some sort of burnout. I burned out in the summer of my third year of university and it wasn’t a fun recovery. I suppose I should have realized that taking extra classes and working 40+ hours a week on 3 jobs would come back to bite me in the ass. This feels different though so I should be good.

Serial Story 2016

It’s a tie. 🙁

There are at least 3 people who’ve voted for both stories every poll. I’ve had comments about people wanting to read both stories.

I’m flattered that people are so invested in these stories.

So much for pawning my indecisions on you… I guess I have to choose.

Tune in next Thursday to see what story won out.

To your health!

If Men are from Mars and Women from Venus why are we on Earth?

Hello,

I read this article titled, “My Wife Divorced Me Because I Left The Dishes By The Sink”

The article

I was going to share it on facebook, tag my wife and say, “Should I be worried?” Then I thought about it and it made me uncomfortable. Angry even.

If you don’t want to read the article, let me sum it up: Men and Women think differently and what’s not a big deal for you (cave)men, might be a big deal for your wife.

The message

The overall message seems to be: Listen to your partner and if they want you to do (or stop doing) something because it bothers them, you should listen to them.

In other words: Respect your partner enough to listen to them!

The Sexism

Beyond the message, however, I dislike everything about the article. It makes assumptions that are so sexist I had to make sure it wasn’t written in the 1950’s.

In the author’s world:

  • ALL women clean and take care of the house,
  • ALL men work outside the house,
  • ALL women are too passive to tell their husbands how they feel and will nag instead of telling them,
  • ALL men are too stupid to realize that by ignoring what your partner wants you’re disrespecting them and making them feel like shit.
  • That lack of communication only affects Cis-Gendered romantic relationships.

My Advice

I feel like I need to put my credentials before I give advice.

Credentials

  • I have a degree in communications and took multiple interpersonal communication classes,
  • I was raised by a single mother who worked as a social worker in a women’s shelter (among other jobs),
  • I’ve written 5.8 books, two of which are going to be published (Yeah I know that has nothing to do with it but I’m proud and excited),
  • Finally, I’ve been married for nearly 7 years (6 years 7 months and 16 days).

You only need three things

To be happy in a relationship you need three things and this isn’t anything new. You need Communication, Empathy, and Compromise.

That list may seem simple and common sense but nothing is easy when emotion takes over. You have to find a way to get to what you really want instead of getting angry or defensive.

Your significant other is a person, not a cartoon stereotype, if they’re getting upset there’s a reason and you should pay attention to it and, if it’s your fault, fix it.

Planets

Bet you thought I wouldn’t get back to the title right?

No matter what shape your relationship takes (Poly, Straight, Same-sex, etc.), you and your partner will always seem to be from other planets. People are different! The way they were raised, their experiences, their traumas, and their way of thinking are always going to be different. You have to accept that no matter how much you have in common, you’re completely separate people.

In that way, you can easily say you are from Mars and your partner is from Venus. You are as different as you are the same and that’s why we’re on Earth. It’s in between the two and represents the best compromise.

Find common ground and find compromise, you’re in a relationship not a dictatorship. The term Partner isn’t just to be inclusive, it represents what a truly good relationships is about being equal partners who share in the blame and the joy of life together.

Common Ground
