What has Eric Been Doing?

Hello My Imaginary Friends,

It feels like a while since I’ve written a real update about everything going on, so here’s an update on what I’m working on.

Novels

A Study in Aether

The book is currently with Beta Reader 1 (or 12 depending on how you’re counting.)

I plan on sending it to Beta Reader 2 by the end of January and 3 by the end of February. If all goes well I’ll be able to resubmit in April. Yay!

Parasomnia

I’m roughly 36% done editing and it’s taking a long time. It’s all about motivation unfortunately. I’ll start working more on in it next week. I’d like to get it to the Weditor by the end of next week. Yikes!

Everdome

I’ve been planning and prepping and wishing I could write instead of editing. So yesterday I caved and started writing a little. I’ve now got 3000 words total of a novel I haven’t technically started.

I’ll start writing it officially once I finish editing Parasomnia, so hopefully Christmas week and then in the New Year.

Stories

Sun-Speaker Universe

I’ve written a sequel to Hal The Sun-Speaker and it should be edited and serial posted here sometime in the future.

Crystal Death Multiverse

I previously called this Project Kitchen Sink. I haven’t worked much on it but I do have 3 completed stories that I’m considering serial posting here.

The Cosmic Cuckoos

The Adventures of Helen will be returning soon. I really enjoyed this story but got distracted by Felix Felicis.

The Ridiculous Adventures of Felix Felicis

This story started as a one off word of the day and turned into a time spanning epic which makes me giggle every time I re-read it. I hope it’s made you laugh as well.

I’m planning on wrapping this one up around April Fools.

Games

The Simplest RPG

I’ve done a little work on fine tuning this game and I have a playtest on Saturday that should give me an idea how well it’s works. I’ve created a cute little character sheet and everything. I’ll post more next week.

FADDS

I won’t have a website up for FADDS this year but I have been hard at work fine tuning the system. I’m very close to the editing phase.

I have a playtest for FADDS this weekend too so I should be good to make some edits and then go through the whole thing to fix issues and clean up language.

Coffee

Next step

I’m ready to call my coffee experiments a success. The product is good and I’ve had some good reviews. I’m planning on upping my production capabilities and next convention I plan on having a giant thermos to let people test the coffee.

My next phase in production is to test out weird flavours. My best sellers were Cinnamon and Banana so I’d like to try some unlikely flavours. I’ll try out some of the fruity stuff and see what happens.

Flavours

I’m keeping the Raktajino, rebranding the Banana Cream as Minion Coffee, and adding Jabba the Peanut a peanut butter flavoured coffee.

I think, unless I hear different, I’ll retire the Spiked and Davroast.

Want Some?

I still have some Spiked(Butter Rum) and Davroast(Chocolate Hazelnut) left over if you’re interested.

Youtube

Silver Stag

I’m still volunteering with Silver Stag Entertainment. Go check out the shows. We’re really quite funny.

JenEric Designs

Things have been quieter than the night before Christmas on the JenEric Designs Youtube page.

All is not lost. I have an idea that is both easy and cheap to produce. Bonus is that my antiquated Premier will be able to handle it easily. I just have to get it set up. More on that later.

Well I’ve been busy lately…

What project, that I’ve been working on, would you like to see more of?

Peanut Butter, Butterscotch Chip Cookies – Recipe

Hello My Imaginary Friends,

I’ve been challenged invited to take part in a Virtual Cookie Exchange, hosted by the wonderful Linda Poitevin.

VirtualCookie-Exchange-Blog-Hop-1

I was invited by the great, and powerful, S.M. Carrière. Find her recipe here.

The idea is to give a cookie recipe and invite 4 other creative types to do the same.

Peanut Butter, Butterscotch Chip Cookies

Adapted from “Purity Cook Book: The Complete Guide to Canadian Cooking” 1970’s edition. This as the first recipe I ever made one my own.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lightly Grease a Baking Sheet.

Sift together:

  • 1 1/4 Cups Flour
  • 1/2 TSP of Baking Soda
  • 1/8 TSP Salt

Cream Together:

  • 2/3 Cup Peanut Butter (Preferably Crunchy)
  • 1/2 Cup Shortening (I use Margarine or Vegetable shortening)
  • 2/3 Cup of Lightly Packed Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of Granulated (AKA White) Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of Butterscotch Chips

Blend in:

  • 1 Egg

Stir in dry ingredients. Shape into small balls, using a tablespoon, and place on greased baking sheet about 3 inches apart. Press 1/2 inch thick with a fork.

Bake in Preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 12 to 15 minutes or until nicely browned.

Makes 2 Dozen cookies

Enjoy!

Yay Winter!

Hi,

I love winter. It’s my second favourite season but the one I feel healthiest during. (Fraking allergies) I also much prefer being cold than being hot.

This morning I’m at a presentation/training/promo for forms given by Adobe. Should be interesting.(no sarcasm)

I had a big crisis of faith this week about the first Elizabeth novel. The publisher that had unofficially said they’d publish it if I get it cleaned up, only publishes their novels in American English.

The fact that this freaked me out should tell you how sensitive authors can be about their work. Thankfully I asked a few friends and they told me that it wasn’t a big deal and I should be happy about maybe possibly hopefully getting a publishing deal.

I think my worry was all about the amount of effort I put into making sure I was using proper Canadian style.

I have a feeling today will be a good day. I was skating late (the side walks are all ice) when I saw my father in-law and he gave me a ride.

So this post is brought to you by my father in-law.

Do you have a preference between Canadian, American, and British English?

Chicken Noodle Soup – Recipe

My Wife (AKA. the Weditor) isn’t feeling well today. Whenever she’s feeling particularly bad I make her Chicken Noodle soup. I should save the bones from our turkeys but whenever I do they tend to freezerburn.

If like me you want to make fresh homemade soup once a year. Here’s a recipe for you.

Emergency, Day of, Chicken Noodle Soup

Makes 10 cups of soup.

You can buy soup stock but it’s 90% salt and if you truly want to show you care, make it yourself.

Part 1 – Soup Stock

  • 1 Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken
  • 4 Stalks of celery
  • 1 large Yellow onion (Spanish or Sweet work too.)
  • 4 medium Carrots
  • Something Leafy (I like Artic Chard or Bok Choi but spinach or kale would do.)
  • 1 TBSP Diced Ginger
  • 1 Diced Clove Garlic.
  • 12 cups cold water

Debone the chicken and separate into three piles; Meat, Bones, and fat/Skin. The skin adds way to much grease.

Clean and Cut but DO NOT PEEL the onion, carrot and ginger. (The skin will the soup the nice yellow colour and add lots of flavour)

Cut the rest into chunks (You don’t have to be precise here I usualy just rip the stuff apart with my hands) and throw into a large pot. (Something that can hold 14 cups)

Bring to a boil. Stir and lower the heat to a simmer.

Cover and let simmer for 3 Hours.

After the simmering pass the soup through a colander to remove the soggy veggies and chicken bones.

You can now make soup or cool and freeze the stock for later.

Part 2 – The Soup

  • 10-12 Cups of soup stock
  • 4 Stalks of celery
  • 4 medium Carrots
  • Something Leafy (I like Artic Chard or Bok Choi but spinach or kale would do.)
  • Chicken meat (leftover from before.)
  • 1/2 TSPThyme
  • 1/4 TSP Pepper
  • 4-6 Cups Noodles
  • 2 Packets of soup base

Slice your celery and carrots, chop your leafy stuff, and place into the soup stock. Add chicken, thyme, pepper, and Noodles.

Bring soup to a boil, stir and then let simmer for half an hour.

Taste the soup. If it tastes great then put the Soup Base packets away, if it tastes a little watery (It probably will. Chicken isn’t the best kind of bone for flavour) add a packet of chicken base stir and taste again.

Add salt if necessary but you probably won’t need it.

Part 3 – Enjoy

You can eat the soup for the next few days or you can freeze it for up to 6 months.

Hope this helps you, or someone you love, feel better.

The Ridiculous Adventures of Felix Felicis – Part 6

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5

“Let me get this straight,” Felix had given up disbelieving. It lessened the headaches. “We need to steal a diamond from a Mobster to give to Leonardo da Vinci. So that he and Nicolai Tesla can defeat the Dinosaurs that wants to kill me. Do I have that right?”

“Yes but…” Miss Eris looked uncomfortable and looked around but Felix wasn’t going to be deterred.

“Nope. Not getting distracted this time. You’re going to look me in the eye and tell me why they’re trying to kill me. Now!” His nose started to itch. There must have been a lot of dust where they were but he refused to look away from the vibrant green orbs that were her eyes. They were mesmerizing and all he could concentrate on for the seconds before she responded.

“I really think we should move just a few more feet to the left,” she avoided the question.

“I insist that we clarify this now,” he stubbornly insisted.

Rumbling and the sound of a steam engines horn pulled his attention away from her. It was an early model train and they seemed to be in a tunnel. Sighing he grabbed her shoulders and dove for the far wall.

Twisting as they flew towards the wall his back hit the stone with a hard impact. The train passed by them and he saw a human shaped Sauren sitting in the dining car with its family. They were dressed in early Victorian clothing.

“We’re running out of time, we have to hurry. This temporal area has already been converted.”

“Converted? What? Why?” She was reaching for his hand, and he sneezed. There was a breeze coming from somewhere and it wasn’t from either end of the tunnel. “I’ve had enough of being dragged around without knowing anything and being afraid.”

Reaching out he pushed on the wall that had, surprisingly, cracked from his weight and pushed on it. A large hole opened and an old stone staircase could be seen.

Seeing her confused look he said, “I don’t sneeze for dirt only dust,” and he walked towards the steps.

The stairway was narrow and lit by torches every fifteen steps. He was terrified and for the first time since he’d met Eris, he admitted it to himself. He wanted to go back to his comfortable, clean apartment and not be messing with time.

“Why are you going down there?” Miss Eris asked.

“I don’t know,” he replied. “These torches couldn’t have been here very long. Someone must be here.”

The final step led to a small corridor that turned sharply to the left. He was about to make the turn when she grabbed his arm and pulled him back. As he was going to argue he saw the person, or rather Sauren, who’d been here before them. He’d been shot by a dozen arrows on either side of his body.

“It’s trapped?” He yelled looking down the corridor. At it’s end he could barely see something glowing. It looked familiar. “That’s the diamond isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is. But we’ll have to get through these traps to get to it.”

“Thanks, I was afraid you’d say that.”

“My pleasure,” she smiled looking happy to be of service. She had missed his sarcasm.

“Do you have a personal force field?”

“No. Why?”

Sighing loudly he said, “For a time traveller you’re not very prepared.”

“My mission was to find you and get you to safety and then ensure you stayed there for twenty four hours, I wasn’t expecting this.” She gestured towards the trapped corridor and her hand got to close. A Line of arrows shot out from where her hand had been and then another, creating a wave of arrows from one end to the other of the corridor.

“Well that’s interesting.” Felix passed his hand and then did it again nothing happened the second time. No new arrows escaped until the wave had finished. He tried again and the same thing happened. “We have two choices, run across trying to outrun the arrows or let the wave go and then run after it and hope it doesn’t go the other way.”

“Ok. Let’s do that.”

“I’d try to exhaust the arrows but something tells me that’s too easy.”

Taking a deep breath he reached out and set off the wave and then started to run. It seemed he and Miss Eris entangled hands before running.

They made it just as the second wave started from the opposite direction. The room they found themselves in was square and there was a small pedestal on the far end of the room with the diamond on it.

“This looks simple enough,” Miss Eris said.

“Wait, I’ve seen this movie before” he took a quarter out of his wallet and tossed it across the room. It bounced and rolled towards the left. The floor gave out on both sides of a narrow bridge. It was less a bridge and more of a pole.

“You had to say something.” He sighed again and put one foot in front of the other. Miss Eris was behind him, a little out of her element, and they were making good progress until the gouts of flame shot out from the pit around them. His nice suit was now crumbled, cut, and singed.

He heard a crunch and heard Miss Eris slip. He tried to turn and catch her but she fell onto the bridge. She held on for dear life. Her hair had escaped the bun and was flowing freely, daring the flames.

He reached down to grab her and almost fell. Finally he managed to awkwardly sit on the bridge and reach for her. She took an iron grip on his hand and he pulled her up. She managed to sit in front of him. Her business skirt had seen better days.

“Are you ok Amanda?” he asked, assuming it would be ok to use her first name now that they’d saved each other’s lives.

“Yes Felix I think I’ll survive.”

They moved together to the platform and he grabbed the diamond.

Taking his hand she looked at him and softly said, “I don’t know why they want to kill you. Just that they do.”

PopExpo and Jurassic World

Hello,

This weekend was PopExpo. Jen, Lindsay, and I had a lot of fun despite the smaller than normal attendance.

My coffee sales were ok. We’ll try again for Comic Con.

If you’d like to buy some I have a few bags of Capt. Jack Harkness (Banana Cream), Spiked (Butter Rum), and Davroast (Chocolate Hazelnut) left. They’re $10 Dollars. You can email me or use the Commissions page. All bags are $10.

Short post today so enjoy the new Jurassic World trailer:

I think this gif expresses how I feel.

If you bought some coffee this weekend, what did you think?

If you didn’t and want to, let me know!

We’re a Team (Or why my Wife does the things I don’t want to.)

My wife went to New York last week and I was hit by the realization that I no longer have the complete skills it takes to survive alone.

Ok maybe I’m exaggerating but the fact that we’ve each specialized in certain tasks becomes more and more evident every year.

This might seems confusing or odd but when your partner is willing, and good, at doing something then it’s natural to let them do it. It frees your time and energy to do other things that you’re good at instead.

In a large group, my wife will do more talking that I will, no matter what group it is. She’s much better at approaching people at events.

On the flip side if we’re in a store I will automatically take the lead and speak with the staff.

There are countless other little things, like how she remembers people’s birthdays and reminds me.

This is an interesting phenomenon and makes me wonder if a lot of failed partnerships (romantic, business, friend, etc) are due to the fact that people don’t want to give up, or take, control of the same things.

Let’s say you ran a bakery and you loved kneading the bread but hated mixing it. If your partner was ok to mix it but wanted to knead it too, you’d have to compromise or tensions would be the only things rising. (Bread puns dough not get old.)

Maybe it’s not just about what comes naturally but what you’re willing to do even when you don’t want to.

Does this form of partnering, where you let the other do the stuff their better at, cause a loss of self or opportunities for self-discovery?

In theory it’s only by failing that we learn from our mistakes but if there’s someone there to help us prevent the mistakes does that mean we’re not learning? Does letting someone else remember all the details of Lord of the Rings make me less of a fan?

Good questions to ask. I obviously have a biased view. I think that having my wife do things that she’s good at, frees me up to do things I won’t be able too. Sometimes that ends terribly, like the time I decided to try and learn metal working (our poor table). And sometimes it ends well, like the time I decided to learn how to roast and flavour my own coffee (the end product is yummy, not sure if it’ll be profitable yet).

These are the types of things I think about while roasting coffee for 10+ hours.

Is there a task that your partner (business, Romantic, etc) takes care of that you’re extremely thankful you don’t need to do?

Eric

Anniversary

I missed my blogging anniversary. Ok I missed one of my blogging anniversaries. I have four, the latest being the creation of this blog way back in August, then there’s the decision to blog regularly even farther back in December 2013, and the creation of my previous Aspiring Something Blog in May 2008.

I’d say I’ve been blogging seriously since December 2013, sporadically since 2008, but I’ve been blogging since 2004.

Back in 2004

Back then the word blog wasn’t in the dictionary and many people hated it. Some used Web Log, or Electronic Diary, serious news types had Ezines. I used a popular site that still exists called Livejournal.com, the original blog is long dead.

Surprisingly the content I wrote back them wasn’t all that different. Mostly I wrote about my life and trying to find love, but you’d find the occasional rant and pseudo-philosophical stuff I still do today. I had no idea I wanted to be a writer despite the half-finished novels and dozens of Dungeons & Dragons stories that could be found on my giant 256mb USB drive. Instead of talking about writing I’d write bad poetry.

I love poetry but I have the hardest time writing it. My in-laws are amazing Limerick writers but I spent all of dinner trying to write one and couldn’t get it. I know the theory and the words but I can’t put them together.

What would you like to see me write more of in the next 10 years?

Eric

Remembrance Day

natwarmem-lgThis is the war Memorial, it doesn’t memorialize wars but those who fought in them for the freedom of others. Read more about Canada’s War Memorial here.

Today is a day that is fraught with mixed emotions. It’s tempting to feel frustration, sadness, and anger but that’s not what today is about. It’s not about war, or what happened last month.

Today is about remembrance and honouring those that have fought or died for others. Canada has traditionally played the role of peacekeeper; it’s a role I’ve always been proud of. We’re not warmongers we don’t pick fights we help those who need help.

I hope you take a few minutes, today, to remember those who have done their best to help others and had to pay the ultimate costs.

To all those who serve, thank you,
Éric
