Inside Out 2 – JenEric Movie Review

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2024 film Inside Out 2.

Story

More than any other Pixar sequel, this feels like a continuation of the story. It’s similar enough but shows the evolution of puberty. Extremely well done despite the secondary embarrassment.

Score: 1

Characters

The new emotions at first look like villains and the film shows their evolution and humanity. Even Anxiety, which spends the movie looking like a bond villain, is shown as a natural part of each of us. Riley’s story is so familiar as to be painful, but in a lived-in kind of way.

Score: 1

Dialogue

The dialogue for the emotions was filled with jokes and puns that helped lessen the tension from the other storyline.

The dialogue with the kids felt authentic but I don’t have much recent experience with that age group.

Score: 1

Visuals and Music

The movie was technically impressive. The textures, lines, and animation was stunning. The ice movements and the way it looked was perfect.

The music was excellent.

Score: 1

Fun

The movie was fun for the most part. I think it would be better a second time. Even 28 years after the age period, I felt each moment of second-hand embarrassment vicerally.

The rest of the family liked it and the kids had a lot of fun.

Score: 0.5

Overall

The perfect sequel in tone, story, and emotion to the first. We see a different part of Riley’s life and the emotions that are happening behind the scenes. It’s excellent on every level, but if you’re easily affected by second-hand embrassement, be prepared for a lot of it.

Final Score: 4.5 Stars out of 5

Idolization Is Bullshit

Hello Friends, Family, and Fans;

I’m tired of finding out that people I respected are assholes.

I’m a firm believer that the media we consume affects us and shapes us. The creators, writers, and to a lesser extent the performers, touch us and leave their mark. It’s a horrifyingly intimate experience.

Because of that, we start to identify with, idolize, and even worship celebrities. In it’s worse cases, it leads to forgetting that those people are human and thinking they owe you their attention. A recent example is what happened to Chappell Roan. On the opposite spectrum, we have celebrities that actively try to hurt minorities, like Trump, Musk, and Rowling.

In the best case, we start to forget that a celebrity is more than what they appear to be. The recent news that Dave Grohl is a serial adulterer, or that Neil Gaiman is a creep shows that they are flawed people who managed to hide the worst parts of themselves from the world for a while.

Some people argue that they are creating a product and it doesn’t matter. In the case of Grohl, I feel like that’s between him, his wife, and his mistresses. Frankly, if it was all consensual, I really don’t care. When the celebrity is actively hurting people, it’s harder for me to forgive.

The problem is worse with writers, because their attitudes are reflected in their art. There are anti-trans, homophobic, and anti-Semitic passages in the Harry Potter books. There are sexist and misogynistic themes in Joss Whedon’s work. And I’m sure if we did a deep dive into Gaimain’s works, we’d find some concerning ideas of consent and sex.

You can’t divorce the work from the artist but you can acknowledge it and work to better yourself.

It’s easy to think this is all new but it’s not. There’s a nearly forty-year-old song by the band Styx called “Show me the Way” and it has a line that still strikes me as relevant.

And every day I’m more confused as the saints turn into sinners
All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay
And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I’ve lost my faith

Show me the Way by Styx

As long as we idolize people, we are going to be hurt. Power corrupts and worship is a form of power. And a lot of people are jerks even without that power.

Is there a way to love art without hurting when the artist turns out to be some degree of monster? I don’t know, but if you find out, let me know.

Stay safe and be kind,

Éric

P.S. Please don’t support creators that are actively hurting people.

How This Works – Read Other Reviews

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2016 film Deadpool.

Story

The story is extremely simple while doing a great job of lovingly mocking the superhero formula.

Score: 0.5

Characters

The cast is nice aand small, giving lots of room of Wade’s emotional journey. The cast that we do get to know are interesting and varied.

Score: 1

Dialogue

The dialogue is next level, mixing meta references, fourth wall breaks, and general silliness.

Score: 1

Visuals and Music

The budget shows with the digital effects but the fight choreography and practical effects are spectacular.

The soundtrack is excellent and filled with great songs and a fun score.

Score: 1

Fun

This was the third time I’ve seen it and despite a few crude moments that I didn’t like, I find it a lot of fun. There’s a joyfulness to the character that’s refreshing.

Score: 1

Overall

Deadpool is often treated as a joke and this leans into the jokes while still having a lot of heart. The action is top-notch and Ryan Reynolds is perfect in the role.

Final Score: 4.5 Stars out of 5

The State of JenEric Coffee September 2024

Hello Coffee Lovers,

According to my notes, coffee prices have almost doubled since we started roasting coffee. The beans, the flavouring, the labels, the bags, con tables, and especially shipping; have all gone up by as much if not more.

The last time we increased our prices was 2016, and I was starting to think we’d have to increase our prices again.

Good news is that I think I found a solution that will help. There’s a Canadian company that makes bags that are significantly cheaper than the American company we used in the past. This will also save us duty and brokerage fees.

I’m also looking into alternate sources for flavouring and labels.

All that said, we are working hard to keep our prices competitive.

Stay tuned and we’ll have some coffee news coming in October when we’ll be celebrating our 10 year anniversary.

Stay Caffeinated,

Éric
