Chapter 12: Rescues and final fights

Being helpless in a tin can is the best descriptor I’ve heard for living in space. But being trapped in your own ship, you can’t pretend you have any sort of power. We all sat there; assassin, immortal doctor, child prodigy, pilot extraordinaire, and three Sun Speakers. Each more useless than the last.

I considered playing I-spy but since the panic room was also my quarters, and I hadn’t had much time to clean, I decided it was a bad idea.

Finally, I heard the rumble of the ship being surgically cut to pieces by the Venusian mothership. They cut out just the panic room and pulled it to their ship while blasting the damned void-beasts that still crawled all over us.

Once in their cargo hold, we opened the doors and piled out. “Thank you for the save, Gwin. You owe me a ship if we get out of this.”

“If? We’re just mopping up the leftovers and we’re good,” she said, exasperated. She wasn’t arguing with me, she was trying to negotiate with the universe, and she knew she was going to lose. That’s why she barely paused before grumpily saying, “Fine. Where do you need to be?”

“There’s a last planetship that’s coming. Take us to the edge of the solar system,” I said, causing both Gwin and Suzie to gasp.

Suzie was the first to say, “That far out you’ll be almost powerless, especially with the micro-suns completely depleted.”

Diamond put his hand on Suzie’s shoulder and said, “It’s what has to be done.” He said it with such charisma and conviction that she didn’t remove the hand from his arm. I was impressed.

If the planet-ship got too far into the solar system it would start nudging the orbits of the planets and that would be devastating to those who lived on them. We needed to stop it quickly.

As we travelled to the right place, the doctor insisted I eat something. Apparently my body needed fuel. That would explain the headache and weakness.

“I’m tired of you almost dying. Can we take a relaxing vacation after this is over?” Suzie said, holding my hand like it was going to run away from her.

“If I find a way to survive this one, I will take you to Earth and show you what a real beach looks like,” I said, smiling. Despite the terraforming and millenia of living on the other planets, beaches didn’t have the same quality as the pristine beaches of Earth.

Our snuggling moment was interrupted by Zuri cooing and saying, “We’re going with you. The vision only showed you so maybe we can do it together?”

“That would only leave the converted Sun-Speakers to take care of Sol,” I said knowing it was a weak defence.

They gave me identical stubborn looks and I laughed saying, “I hope I look half as cute as the two of you when I do that.”

Suzie shook her head and said, “She’s adorable, he’s sexy, and you’re just barely tolerable.”

“Love you too!” I replied and kissed her passionately.

The planet-ship was more of the same writhing masses of void-beasts. That didn’t make it any less horrifying. I don’t think I could ever get used to that view and that’s probably for the best.

“So what now? How do we stop that?” asked Gwin, annoyed. She probably hadn’t rested since the war started.

“We are going to crash a shuttle in the planet-ship, and then take over its propulsion, sending it into the black holes at the centre of the universe,” I said with complete confidence.

Zuri added, “If we blow it up, we’ll disrupt the gravity in the system and that’s a bad idea.”

I got a kiss from Suzie, a stimulant from the doctor, a hug from Gwin, and a dirty look from her husband. All very reassuring.

“If these are my last words, I want you to remember that I died protecting humanity, not because it loved me but because I believed there was good in us.”

“Nice,” Diamond said.

“Little sappy,” said Zuri.

We got into the shuttle and they let me pilot, probably because they weren’t used to the controls. Both of them were better pilots.

Part way there, they both asked, “What’s the real plan?”

“Crash the ship and figure it out there,” I shrugged.

We crashed through into what the scanners had told us was the largest cargo hold.

The ship was so massive that it kept its atmosphere with gravity alone, which meant our ship piercing the walls did nothing.

The room was large enough that we could have put half the Venusian fleet inside with room to spare, but it was empty except for a large stone semicircular gate with alien sigils on it.

We stepped out of the shuttle and I walked toward the gate. In the vision from Sol, I died horribly in front of that gate, killed by a void-beast five times the size of a regular one.

When we were close enough, the large beast appeared and spoke in a raspy voice, “You are foolish to come here. I will kill you!”

“Foolish is definitely my strong suit,” I said.

Both Zuri and Diamond’s eyes flickered like they were getting a vision. I was jealous for a split second before I realized I was the distraction.

“You can talk. Why can’t the others?”

The beast growled and said, “We can all talk but not in your disgusting language.”

“Great. I’m guessing you’re a sun speaker?”

Its eyes grew wide and it moved forward like a cat about to pounce. It wheezed, “Yes.”

In my vision, this is where it pounced on me and played with my entrails until I died. I waited and at the last second threw myself forward and down. The beast flew over me and landed elegantly on its face.

“No!” it bellowed. I thought it was talking to me, but a quick glance back showed Zuri and Diamond holding the gate and forcing plasma energy through it with their powers.

I rushed to the beast and grabbed its head. I tried to cleanse it the way I had other Sun Speakers, but it wasn’t just loyal, it was part of its god.

My goal was to slow it down and not let it attack or call the other beasts to attack.

Suddenly the gate opened and connected to a black hole. “Now!” I shouted into my coms and we were teleported away.

The black hole turned the planet ship inside out and devoured it. When the metaphorical dust settled, there was nothing left but the gate floating in space.

We were finally done.

The circle glowed and bright lights erupted out of it as Tim and Ginny forced the lever down on his prototype Metaphysical Transfiguration device.

Rachel, still held by the neck by the Smiling Dark, felt oddly light. A feeling of joy and excitement ran through her. It was a feeling she hadn’t felt since she was a child.

* * *

It was Christmas morning. She and Natasha were sitting in painful anticipation for it to be seven AM. The time their parents told them they could wake them up.

“What do you think Santa brought us this year?” asked Rachel, vibrating with excitement.

“I don’t know, but I hope my motion sensor camera caught him doing it,” Natasha’s eyes sparkled with delight. “You know this is just a memory right?” she asked.

The question caught Rachel off guard. “Can’t I enjoy it?”

“This was my last Christmas…” Natasha trailed off.

“Am I dead?”

Laughing, Natasha said, “Always the optimist. No sweetie. You’re not dead… Not yet.”

“Are you real?” Rachel threw herself at her sister and hugged her.

“At the moment, anything you think of can be real. Now wake up.”

“I still miss you,” Rachel’s tears fell onto her sisters back as they hugged.

“I know, but I don’t miss you enough yet to have you join me. Wake up.”

* * *

The feeling of excitement and power was almost painful.

“What just happened?” asked the man in front of her. He was shadowed as if light didn’t enjoy touching him, but he was still just a man. His face looked like an aged movie star’s, his skin closer to grey than any real colour.

“I think you just became punchable.” She punctuated her quip with a punch.

Lightning crackled around her fist as it connected with the Smiling Dark’s face. It left small burn marks on his cheek. He fell to one knee, his smile disappearing for a moment, and said, “Just because I’m corporeal doesn’t mean I’m helpless.”

His arms reached out and shadows coalesced around his hands forming dark blades. He took a fencer’s stance and started moving towards her. She could see dark tendrils of shadow moving around him like some sort of Lovecraftian monster.

The machine had turned him into a monster that creates and manipulates shadow instead of being made of it. The belief of monsters all over the world that he existed was amplified. Rachel knew what had happened to him had happened to her. The belief of everyone on campus was that she was a demi-god, and she could feel the power of the gods inside her.

“Leave now and you can live.”

“I will have you one way or another.” He attacked and she parried with blades of lightning.

“Ew!” she exclaimed before adding, “I warned you.” Turning to her friends, she said, “Leave the room.”

They fenced, Rachel letting him think he could win, until everyone had left the room.

“I am darkness, shadow, and death. You can’t kill me.”

“I am a demi-god of lightning and energy. Let’s see if you can survive with so much light there isn’t room for shadows.” She reached deep into herself for her new power and pulled it out forcing it into a ball of pure lightning bright plasma around her. She let it expand and cover every millimetre of the room.

The Smiling Dark’s screams were drowned out by the crackle of power. When the entire room was light and electricity she tried to stop it and found she couldn’t. The energy went wild and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

* * *

“Thank you,” whispered her sister’s voice as Rachel started to wake up.

Everything hurt. Rachel opened her eyes to see that she was in her dorm. “She’s awake,” yelled Ginny. Her friends walked into the room followed by a large man with an eyepatch.

“How are you feeling?” asked the large man.

“I hurt, but I think I’m ok.” She was better than that; she knew her broken bones and cuts had healed completely.

“The ache will pass with time. It’s a side effect of returning you to your human self.”

“Ok.” It was all she could think.

“You fought well, Rachel, and for that I hold no grudge for you copying my son’s powers. Just don’t do it again.”

His son? Rachel’s eyes went wide. “Odin. Oh my…” she trailed off.

He chuckled. “If you so choose, your place in Valhalla is guaranteed.” With that, he disappeared.

“Way to go, you amused and impressed the All-Father,” Tim said, probably meaning it to be a joke, but sounding just as amazed as she felt.

“Wow.”

“So whatever you did, vaporised my lab and the entire Transmutation building.” Tim still sounded amazed, and seeing her worried look, he quickly added, “Don’t worry about it. It happens more often than you’d think. Transmutation is a volatile area of study.”

“Dowan and I got everyone out in time,” said Ronnie smiling at Dowan.

“Naw, it was mostly you, man,” Dowan replied smiling back.

“Oh, get a room,” gagged Tim.

Turning to Tim, Ginny said, “That’s not a bad idea.” She cocked an eyebrow and crooked a finger. Tim turned bright red and rolled to the kitchen. They closed the door behind them as they entered the kitchen area.

Both Dowan and Ronnie looked uncomfortably around the room until she said, “I’m not up for a threesome.” Their eyes opened wide until they saw she was joking.

“Who would you have chosen?” Dowan asked, with a twinkle in his eye.

“Yeah,” smirked Ronnie.

“Me. If I had to choose someone to die, it would have been me.” The boys looked a little disappointed with her answer and she added, “If you’re asking who I choose now, I don’t know. I like both of you and I’ve had a long few days. Why don’t we have a few dates before I decide?”

“Ok,” they said at the same time.

“I’m not opposed to that threesome,” said Dowan, and he winked at Ronnie before disappearing.

Ronnie turned bright red, something Rachel thought vampires couldn’t do, and said, “Take care,” before walking out of the room still blushing. There would be a lot of time for her to choose. Avenging her sister made her feel more at peace than she’d ever thought possible, and now she was looking forward to her classes and flirting with two hot boys. Her life was looking pretty good.

Both Tim and Ginny were in the kitchen. Ginny walked back in and asked, “Anything I can do?”

“I’m ok. Thanks.”

“I’m glad you’re alive. Sorry you lost your god powers.”

“I’m not. I like being me. I like being Only Human.”

The End

The Dying World – Story

It is the last city on a dying world. Far away from anything you or I have ever known. It is ringed by mountains so smooth and high that they are impossible to scale. The city’s name is Ending.

Ten thousand years ago, the sentient races of that world started dying. All their magic, science, and medicine couldn’t figure out why. All wars ended, all hostilities ceased, and all hatred disappeared.

The great gods that had looked over the world for over five hundred billion years were also affected by this blight. In a last attempt to save those that the gods loved so dearly they gave up their power to the god of the earth. Terhan, used all the powers available to create Ending, the only safe place on a dying world. It weakened him to the point of almost being mortal. He has ruled, uncontested, as king for ten thousand years.

The great king who was a god, hasn’t been seen in a millennia, it is rumoured that he is sick or dead. These rumours are spoken in whispers, in fear that the king’s death harkens the death of the city. He has never taken a wife and never had an heir.

In an attempt to save the world, or what’s left of its people, the Academy has been researching ways to leave the planet. They have lost too much knowledge and none of their attempts have been successful. The light of the sun grows darker and redder every year. Soon there will be nothing but darkness.

Until then there is Ending, a city whose name had seemed ironic when it was built. It had been a place of beauty, shinning pillars of stone. Lush rooftop gardens, and the Ivory tower of light that soared above the city as a beacon to all sentient creatures that there was still hope.

The stone now crumbles, the garden’s rot, and the tower collapsed long ago. Nothing but a battered stump remains. Worst of all, people have started dying without reason. The healer priests of Terhan deny that it’s the ancient plague but no one believes them. Unlike other time and places, there is no panic. No violence. There is only despair.

The castle guards, who were once the pillars of honour, have been kidnapping people. Some from the streets, others from their beds, but all of them have one thing in common. They are all marked at birth, with magical sigils on their bodies. It gives them powers that no other mortal has. They are the only ones the scream and rage against the dying of that city. They are the Marked and they have almost all been taken to castle, never to return.

The Marked are that worlds last hope for survival. Only they can, find a cure for the plague, save the dying world, and lead their people to prosperity.

Just Watch Me

It’s the holiday season. For some, that means stress piled on top of stress. For me this year it means I’m ignoring the stress and cuddling up with the good feelings. (And I haven’t even bought my yearly Irish Cream. I swear.) There’s just something so hopeful about this time of year.

Resolutions

Someone once told me to make New Year’s resolutions that you know you can accomplish. Let me give you advice my wonderful Imaginary Friends. Make New Year’s resolutions that you can accomplish, that you can fail, and that you want to accomplish.

I could easily say that this year I’ll lose 30 pounds. It’s possible, I could easily fail, but I don’t really care enough. I could say that I will breathe regularly. It’s possible, and I certainly want to but I can’t really fail. So follow the three guidelines and you’ll have nice, useful, and attainable goals.

Last year I resolved to do three things, Read more, Write regularly, and Post more on this blog. Two out of three ain’t bad right? I managed a novel and 4 short stories. Read 31 books and I’m on 32. I unfortunately didn’t update much. Sorry.

This year I resolve to do three things again, Write regularly (500 Words a Day of novels or stories), Continue Reading as much (30+ might be tiny compared to my wife who reads that in 3 months), improve my internet presence (See next).

Projects

I have multiple projects in the works, some of which have been in the works for way to long. I’m hoping to get them started and some of them finished this year. Others might take a few years but I’ll get there.

FADDS (Four Attribute Dual Dodecahedron System)

I’ve been working on the rules for FADDS for going on 3 years now. I have most of them worked out and I’m hoping to have a downloadable PDF and hyperlinked SRD finished by the end of 2014. From there I’d like to work on beta testing at Cons and maybe running a kickstarter for the basic rules book.

Elizabeth Investigates (or the Baker City Adventures)

I’m going to be taking a break from writing this series. As much as I love the characters and setting, it’s time to diversify my available products. In other words I’d like another book to shop around. I am waiting to hear from a few publishers about the first book. If they decline it I’ll look into self-publishing. (See previous post for incoherent ramblings.)

Project Kitchen Sink

When I was in high school, one of my favourite books was the Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. I loved it for the structure. It’s effectively a series of short stories that work themselves into a larger narrative.

Lately I’ve been enjoying George R.R. Martin’s multi-character style, where he jumps from one character to another filling in their side of the story. I did this in my latest novel and my beta readers have said they enjoyed it.

Project Kitchen Sink is a going to be a Fantasy novel riddled with elements of science fiction, mystery, and adventure. It’s going to jump from one protagonist to the other in an over-arching plot with multiverse destroying consequences. I want it to be character driven with multiple different styles. I’m aiming for it to be a standalone novel that is roughly 100,000 words. I have 5 characters stories plotted out.

The Dying World

This is a story and world I’ve been working on for about half a year now and I’m hoping to turn it into a generic roleplaying game adventure. It would be a large fantasy/sci-fi adventure that is compatible with any roleplaying system.

This is a ridiculously ambitious project and I might not get started until summer. Before I submit/publish it, I’ll have to run it with at least 1 group.

The basic story will be laid out in a future post.

Youtube

Last year I became obsessed with some youtubers and decided that if I ever get the right equipment, I’d start my own show. I’d like it to take on several formats and post once a month to start and maybe every week when I get good at it.

The formats would include but not be limited to:

  • How Hard Could it be to Cook _____ (Where I cook something I’ve never tried before.)
  • The Canadian Conspiracy Nut (The fictional story of a conspiracy nut who accidently got it right.)
  • Basic Vlog (Where I can rant and talk about stuff.)

Websites

I want to create a website that combines all my online stuff and my wife’s and organizes it coherently.

The main page would be JenEric Designs and that would integrate:

And add:

  • A Youtube Channel,
  • A Store for JenEric Designs,
  • And Forums

The idea would be to have some sort of content being published at least 4-5 times a week.

In Conclusion, We’re Just Starting.

That looks like a lot more than I expected but I look forward to it. I hope this hasn’t been too long and rambling.

I also hope that the followers (or what I call My Imaginary Friends) will follow and grow as the projects get realized.

That’s it for now. Try and enjoy the season and all the joy that it brings.
