Week 31 – Boxtrolls Results

Virtual school started out a bit rough – Dragon was unfocussed and not able to listen well for the regular morning routine. But then they did an exercise video, which Dragon adores, and she was much more focussed after that.

Then they did printing words that begin with the letter ‘G’ and she did very well.

After recess, they did a short reading, and then the teacher had set up a powerpoint with images that the students used to “read” a sentence. There were some very funny sentences made. My favourite was “Le Tyranosaur mange les enfants.” Dragon’s was “Le docteur pleur parce qu’il a pincé le doigt.”

After lunch, they were split into groups to talk in French. I don’t think that it went particularly well, because the kids don’t know what to talk about with each other AND they don’t know much French. When it was led by the teacher, it went okay, but when she left, not so much. Maybe if they had a goal like doing math like last week…

They did not do math because too many kids were tired.

Homeschool was very busy this week.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: she practiced her finger exercises every day this week. They started with finger exercises and the practicing showed, she was doing well even with the hard one. She did lessons 4 and 5 were almost perfect, and then they did lesson 6, and she did such a good job. Then they started lesson 7 and she did the first row very well (other than mixing up D and F on her right hand). Then they did chopsticks, and it’s going well, so she was introduced to the next part. She focussed and tried hard and did really well.

We have a French playlist that I can play through the Google mini, with a variety of artists.

Crochet

We did not do any crochet this week.

Basic Information

We are working on yesterday (hier) and tomorrow (demain) around any given day. The months of the year is going well. We’re working on the month before and after any given month. That’s coming slowly.

The saisons de l’année are all memorized. We’re working on how each of them feel and the types of things we can do during each of them.

When I ask her “combien” for any of the above, she responds in complete sentences.

Printing words

Printing went very well this week.

Counting objects/math-type activities

She had no problems with the counting worksheet. We counted by 10s to 100 and counted up to 70.

Math went well this week with no tears.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Raiponce in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words!

Activity

Make a movie – We put together the last prop and then set up for taking pictures. Dragon did an excellent job in directing me to move the characters. She used the storyboard she had drawn to help keep us on track. This movie, we decided to record her voice, rather than do it in the Silent Movie style that we did for the other one. We did include the dialogue in the background of the movie. She recorded the music for the movie as well.

Learn how to draw a 3-D box – This went super well. I queued up the video and we watched it, and then we went through the video slowly, pausing after each step for her to draw it. She needed a little bit of help with one or two lines and about which lines to erase, but she did all the work. I was very impressed.

Week 30 – Totoro Results

Virtual school was a bit rough in the morning. There was a misunderstanding when Dragon was stretching, not raising her hand, and then when she was raising her hand, the teacher called on someone else. Cue tears. I think she prefers one-on-one lol

They learned the letter Q today. Dragon loves printing because she’s good at it.

They were read a story about the beginning of Spring, and asked to describe what they saw on the page. Dragon raised her hand (yay) and said “des fleurs”, but then when she was asked if she saw anything else, I prompted her with “do you want to say more?” and she raised her hand and said “more”. I said, “No, more words in French.” and she raised her hand again and said “more words in French.” And I honestly think she wasn’t doing it to be funny! She got really upset when I asked her to describe the pictures in French and didn’t want to say anything else.

After lunch, they did math in small groups (I guess the teacher is feeling more comfortable with the technology now?) and Dragon was put in a group with two other kids that she’s familiar with. One of them presented their math first, and then Dragon presented (addition), and then the other one said that they couldn’t do it. Dragon reassured them that it was alright. (sweetie). Then when they went back into the main class, she presented her math again. Her teachers were very impressed with how well she did. (So am I, but I knew she could do it.)

Totoro was a big hit this week. Dragon watched the movie twice on Monday; once in French for homeschool and once in English at night.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: she practiced her finger exercises every day this week. They started with finger exercises and the practicing showed, she was doing well even with the hard one. She did lessons 4 and 5 no problem, and then they started lesson 6, and she played the first two long lines very well. Chopsticks sounds like chopsticks now. She was focussed, paid attention, and tried hard.

We have a French playlist that I can play through the Google mini, with a variety of artists.

Crochet

We did a few rows of crochet this week.

We took it easy this week, as it’s the first week back after the break, for the out loud counting, and only counted to 20, 30, and 40. Dragon found it easy.

Math was interesting. On Monday, she decided that she didn’t want to draw it out, and decided to use her toes. Great problem solving skills. Then the more complicated math had a series in letters, and she didn’t like that, so I changed them to numbers, which went much better.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Raiponce in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words!

Activity

Make a movie – Dragon is EXTREMELY excited about her movie. She’s done a dry run twice already. I wrote out her plot, she drew the storyboard, and I wrote out her dialogue. She then transcribed the dialogue onto pieces of paper that we can insert into the stop motion movie next week.

Make a soot sprite – Dragon enjoyed this and is very proud of the result. She was able to do most of it herself, too, which made her happy.

Week 29 – The Secret World of Arrietty Results

Dragon had a rough morning this week in virtual school. The teachers asked everyone to speak one sentence aloud in French, and one student said multiple and Dragon got completely overwhelmed. Then she was called on next and she froze and wasn’t able to say anything at all.

They learned the letter K, which she was excited about. (because her name starts with a K) They had the kids make a K out of playdough…which seems to be a stumbling block for her for some reason. Then they had them write K words, which Dragon very much enjoys.

After lunch, they did math (subtraction). Dragon did extremely well and thoroughly enjoyed the lesson.

Homeschool went well this week.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: she practiced her finger exercises every day this week. They started with finger exercises during her lesson, and the practice is showing. Then they did lesson 3 for the last time. Lessons 4 and 5 both went very well. Clapping and counting is going much better. Then Dragon played chopsticks at speed!

We have a French playlist that I can play through the Google, with a variety of artists.

Crochet

She did not do any crochet this week.

Basic Information

We are working on yesterday (hier) and tomorrow (demain) around any given day. The months of the year is going well. We’re working on the month before and after any given month. That’s coming slowly.

When I ask her “combien” for any of the above, she now responds in complete sentences.

Printing words

Printing went very well this week.

Counting objects/math-type activities

She had no problems with the counting worksheet. She has been counting to 72 out loud. I have started using a counting book to show her what the numbers look like, and she counts to 100 while looking at it, with a small amount of assistance in the 70s and 90s. We continued counting by tens. She is still having trouble remembering 80, but once she gets that one, she’s fine for 90. It’s a work in progress that’s getting easier each week. Something I find interesting – she forgets 75 and 95, when she used to forget 16. (say them in French, and you’ll see why I think it’s interesting)

Math went very well this week. She is really grasping concepts. However, there was a bit of an issue with drawing a star for the pattern, so that is not in the picture.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Vampirina in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words! We’re done the second season and have to wait until season 3 airs on Disney+. Until then, we’re going to watch Raiponce (Rapunzel series).

Activity

Make a fairy door – We glued the door together, painted and sparkled it, and then glued on a doorknob. We did not add any other decorations because Dragon didn’t want to cover up her painting.

Make a hair clip – Dragon chose to do the third style of hair clip, the bow. We cut up some material and glued it, and then sewed it to the clip. Dragon did a bunch of the pinning and sewing.

Make a miniature room – Rather than make a full room, we just made a bed. The bed itself is made out of cardboard, and the pillow is made from scrap fabric. Dragon did all the sewing on the inside edges and stuffed it, and I did the hidden seam.

Bonus! These are the beans and peas that we put in the baggies in Week 25 – Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest!

Week 28 – Springtime with Roo Results

Virtual school was a bit of a struggle this week, especially at the beginning, mostly because one of the teachers was having trouble with her microphone. There was a special visit from a firefighter, who talked about the importance of fire safety in the home. (Although we have a Nest protect, not a traditional fire detector, so Dragon was very confused.)

They learned the letter ‘c’. Dragon loves the printing portion of the day.

After lunch, they did a subtraction game, and Dragon DEMOLISHED it. But when she tried a more complicated one that was timed, she panicked and forgot everything. Poor thing. I don’t like timed math either.

Homeschool went well this week.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: she practiced her finger exercises every day this week. Their lesson went really well. Dragon was very focussed. Finger exercises, you could tell that she had practiced. They did lessons 3,4,&5. She did very well, focussed and tried hard. They did clapping and counting before playing, and it worked a little bit; they’ll keep trying that. Then they did chopsticks, and she’s improving in that too.

We continued counting by tens. It’s a work in progress that’s getting easier each week.

She loved that “neuf oeufs” rhymed!

Math went well and we finally had a breakthrough with adding large numbers, where she started with the large number and added the smaller number to it.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Vampirina in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words! We’re almost done the second season and we’ll have to find a new show to watch soon.

Activity

Painting eggs – We made paper mache eggs on Wednesday and let them dry. Then we painted them on Saturday. I think they turned out rather well.

Make a daffodil – we ended up not doing this one

Paint a flower pot – We painted flower pots on Friday. Dragon really enjoyed it.

Week 27 – Rise of the Guardians Results

Virtual school started a bit rough. Dragon had trouble focussing at first, when asked questions, but once they started learning the new letter “h”, she was able to write down all the words they were given. She added some math at the top of the page on her own as well.

Math in the afternoon, they learned about quantities (smaller than, bigger than, equal to). Dragon said that it wasn’t “real math” (I’m quoting her), but grasped the concept quickly.

She presented her Emotions Touch and Feel book that she made the previous week, but I’m not sure the teachers understood what it was because they kept asking if it was a journal.

Homeschool went well this week.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: Still has trouble with the first note, no matter what order she’s asked in, it will always be trouble. Did the finger exercises, with only a little hand adjustment. Did lessons 3,4&5. Five is a new one and she did very well. She was very focussed, paid attention, and tried very hard.

We have a French playlist that I can play through the Google, with a variety of artists.

Crochet

She did not do any crochet this week.

We continued counting by tens. It’s a work in progress.

Math: The math went very well this week. We also did some coding, both the bee and the first kind. She did the first kind so quickly that I feel as though I blinked and she was done!

Activity

Colour Easter eggs – I was pleased that she switched colours without prompting. She also mostly stayed inside the lines, which was a pleasant surprise, as I haven’t seen her colour in a while.

Design Dreamland – She melted down a bit when asked to draw, but I managed to get her back on track fairly quickly by breaking the castle down into it’s basic shapes.

Learn about the moon – The weather didn’t cooperate this week, so we didn’t get a chance to use the telescope. We’ll do that later on. Instead, we watched a bunch of YouTube videos about the moon. Both kids enjoyed watching them.

Week 26 – Inside Out Results

Virtual school was interesting this week. She sang along with every song in the morning. But when the teachers asked her a question, she wasn’t able to concentrate long enough to formulate her response. I blame time change.

They learned about the letter ‘d’. They initially tried having the kids listen to words and tell them which ones had the sounds ‘d’ in it, but the sound quality wasn’t great. Dragon suggested that they write the letters, and she wrote ‘dauphin’, ‘dragon’, and ‘deux’.

The story was about different professional jobs. Dragon liked the pictures.

In the afternoon, they learned about solid shapes. Dragon had a LOT of fun playing the games and did very well with it.

She presented her giant Yoshi to the class. The teacher asked her what shape it is, and she was completely stumped.

Homeschool went well this week, although I completely underestimated how long making a board book would take, so we ended up not doing the paper maché.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: We started with the fingering exercises, which she did very well with. Then they did the recognition of the notes and the clapping and counting, and my mom has discovered that Dragon has memorized them based on where they are on the page. So they tried a different page, and yes, she has them memorized. So there will be a game devised to help her actually count properly. Lesson 3 was perfect, no problems. Then they did lesson 4 and it did not go well at all, so they stopped at the end of that.

Math: Dragon found the math fun this week. She liked the second worksheet.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Vampirina in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words!

Activity

Write touch and feel book
Put touch and feel book together – Dragon made a 4-page book about emotions, based on the movie emotions. We didn’t do anger, because we couldn’t figure out how to draw it. It took a lot longer than I realized to make this, so we didn’t manage to make the emotion ball. We might do paper maché at some other time.

Week 25 – Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest Results

Virtual school went well this week. They had a guest speaker again, and Dragon was much more amenable to the change in routine today. They talked about respect.

They learned the letter ‘p’ and wrote a couple words with that letter. She did very well.

After lunch, they practiced ‘sur’, ‘sous’, and ‘dans’, putting a toy on, under, and in objects. She enjoyed that.

Then they did some coding with a little bee. Dragon didn’t seem to understand what was going on, and I didn’t know how to help her. I think the French was making her stress out. We’ll try it again later in the week.

The homeschool portion of her week went really well.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: They did lessons 3 & 4 perfectly with all the notes no problem. The fifth lesson, she lost her focus. They made some adjustments to how she holds her fingers because they’re not being held in the right position.

Math went incredibly well this week. We did the new coding (as well as doing it physically) and the old coding on the computer. We also did some physical movement with having her go on top of, beside, underneath, close to, far from, etc different objects (all in French).

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Vampirina in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words!

Activity

3 Rs – Dragon really enjoyed the activities through the link, and we had a good dialogue about what we do in our house to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Learn about the Amazon Rainforest – Dragon loved watching videos that we found after reading the facts about the rainforest. Especially that sloths live there.

Plant seedlings in the house – we used the paper napkin/baggie method found here. Dragon is very excited to see what the roots look like. She planted 3 beans and 3 peas.

Week 24 – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Results

Virtual school was good this week. I was feeling pretty awful because Pegasus had woken up every half hour during the night, but fortunately his wakeups hadn’t bothered her because I think she was pretty awake right away.

She paid attention to the regular morning songs and sang them when requested. She lost focus right before being asked about the seasons, but was able to get back on track fairly quickly.

She enjoyed writing out words that began with the letter “t”. She is remembering to write in small caps more often, which I’m impressed by.

They’re talking about professional jobs in school this month, so she had a bunch of questions for me regarding the strange words.

The story was about building toys with recycled materials, and Dragon was very excited about that idea.

Math was talking about solid shapes and having the kids go on fetch-quests to find household objects that fit the description. They had to organize them based on whether they roll or slide.

Homeschool was pretty great this week.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week.

Music

Piano: Same issue with clapping and counting – the first one she misses, no matter which one it is, but all the rest are fine. They skipped lesson one and did lesson 2 (CD on right hand CB on left hand) and she does the whole lesson perfectly so they’re going to skip it in the future. Then they did lesson 3, which adds E on right hand and A on left hand. That went alright. Then lesson 4 was adding F on right and G on left, and she got it eventually, but it was like she’d never seen it before. And this was review. There was no focus by the end of lesson 4, so they did not learn anything new.

We have a new French playlist that I can play through the Google, with a variety of artists.

Crochet

She did several stitches this week.

Printing words

Printing went very well this week. She had some issues with the letters on her own, but I think she just wasn’t concentrating.

Counting objects/math-type activities

She had no problems with the counting worksheet. She has been counting to 70 out loud (still remembering 16 without prompting). I have started using a counting book to show her what the numbers look like, and she counts to 100 while looking at it, with a large amount of assistance in the 70s and 90s.

Math went incredibly well this week.

Activity

Weather – We looked at a book about weather that we have. We talked about the water cycle, water and air currents, and how geography can change what happens with the weather (Vancouver vs Ottawa). She enjoyed it so much that I added a water cycle colouring sheet.

Design an island – She had fun deciding what to put on her island, but had a little difficulty implementing it. She hadn’t really done much with markers before this and was upset when her lines were too thick.

Cook meatballs – Dragon made this for my birthday dinner (Friday March 5). It was delicious.

Week 23 – Zootopia Results

Virtual school went very well this week. After a bit of a difficult morning waking up, Dragon rallied nicely and focussed very well on school.

The morning routine was back to normal, with Oh Canada, the bonjour song (she was asked to sing after and did very well), the petit prince song (she was asked to sing the lundi verse and did well), the jours de la semaine song, the mois de l’annee song, and then she was asked the names of the seasons.

They learned about the letter ‘j’ and she wrote several words that started with ‘j’. She was very excited to practice her printing with other kids.

The story was cute, about a fly that went to space. Then they watched a video about the way they bring food to space with Chris Hadfield. She was excited because she has his kid’s book The Darkest Dark. She loves it.

Math was about locations (far, near, in front, behind) and they played a game where the teacher told them where they had to go. Dragon got used to the words eventually. We’ll practice them. Then they did coding again, which she LOVES. She got to do 5 sets with the teacher, and then she did 5 more by herself. She had to tell the teacher the direction (haut, bas, droit, gauche). We’ll practice that more.

The last thing they did was dance, which she always enjoys doing.

Homeschool this week was pretty great as well.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week, and practiced doing the spilts. She also danced with her Yoshi.

Music

Piano: There was no full lesson this week. She practiced her finger movements for the five notes and her triads.

We have a new French playlist that I can play through the Google, with a variety of artists.

Crochet

She did several stitches this week.

Basic Information

We are working on yesterday (hier) and tomorrow (demain) around any given day. The months of the year is going well. We’re working on the month before and after any given month. That’s coming slowly.

Printing words

Printing went very well this week. She had some issues with the letters on her own, but I think she just wasn’t concentrating.

Counting objects/math-type activities

She had no problems with the counting worksheet. She has been counting to 50 out loud (four days in a row she has remembered 16 without prompting!). On Friday, she counted to 70!

Math – the math went very well. She has been completing the worksheets with very little assistance.

We did coding through the computer program that the teacher gave us. I had Dragon say the direction before she clicked on it. She LOVES this game.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Vampirina in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words!

Activity

Experiment Blue Eyes – I had her group the shapes by colour, and then by shape. Then I told her to put all the ones with angles in one group, and the circles in another. I told her that the angled ones were better. “Why?” she asked. “Why do you think?” I replied. “Maybe because there’s more of them?” she answered after a great deal of thought. “Is that a good reason?” I asked. “No!” immediate response from her. Then she added “the circles would feel sad.” So I told her, “oh, you’re right, the circles must be better, because there’s less of them.” And she vehemently shook her head. “Why not?” I asked. “Because they’re all shapes. They’re all the same thing.” she replied. I told her that she was correct, and we should never make someone feel bad about being who they are.

Thank you, Dragon. I didn’t even need to teach you the lesson today.

Shapes Activity – we used the book she made in Week 16 to identify the shapes

Elephant rescues in Africa – we watched the video and Dragon was very sad that mother elephants had been killed or were dying. I got lots of cuddles. She was happy that the babies were taken care of and she liked watching them hold the bottle.

Week 22 – Soul Results

I let Dragon have a bit more independence during virtual school this week, to try to get her to ask her questions to the teachers instead of to me. I’m not sure it worked very well.

They had a guest speaker again, with a puppet, that taught them about organizing their space to be able to focus. It was cute, but Dragon wasn’t able to tell me what they were saying. She did enjoy the drawing that they asked her to do.

A tree with 2 yellow apples and 3 red apples, and a purple worm in a hole in the trunk. At the base of the tree are 4 orange pumpkins and Pegasus before he was born. At the top, to the left of the tree is a blue bird. The stack of people is our family standing on each other’s heads so that we can reach the apples to pick them.

Math was working on subtraction. Dragon used crayons to demonstrate the answer to the question that was asked of her.

She presented her doll of Valkyrie that was given to her for Christmas by a friend.

We had parent-teacher interviews on Wednesday, and they told us that she’s doing very well in math and she’s very polite and friendly, but that she needs to work on her French, which we’re fully aware of. How do you get someone stubborn to speak something she doesn’t want to speak? We’re working on it.

Homeschool was interesting this week. A lot of thinking about stuff and how we feel.

Dance

She did ballet 2 times this week, and practiced doing the spilts.

Music

Piano: First we reviewed her homework, which she did very well, so she obviously had practiced. And then she did it on the piano, right hand, and then left hand, and then both hands together. So she has new homework for this week; triads (1, 3, 5) on each hand. Then they did the clapping and counting (after the first note; the first one always seems to give her problems). They skipped lesson 1 and started at lesson 2, which she did perfectly without needing to repeat anything. They worked up to adding the fifth note on each hand, and that’s when it all fell apart a bit, so they ended the lesson. Chopsticks went very well.

The saisons de l’année are all memorized. We’re working on how each of them feel and the types of things we can do during each of them.

When I ask her “combien” for any of the above, she now responds in complete sentences.

Printing words

Printing went very well this week. I’m quite impressed with her letters, tbh.

Counting objects/math-type activities

She had no problems with the counting worksheet. She has been counting to 40 out loud (three days in a row she has remembered 16 without prompting!)

Math – after a meltdown because she couldn’t draw a star, both math worksheets were completed very quickly. We also played a math game that the teacher sent along last week with subtractions, and she had absolutely zero trouble playing it. It was a lot of fun to play it with her.

Storytime

We read stories from the teacher’s outline that was sent to us on Monday. She enjoyed that, and we will continue to do it next week.

We watched Vampirina in French on Disney Plus, one episode a day. Dragon is enjoying it immensely, and is even recognizing some words!

Activity

Music blues and jazz – I put on Youtube videos for each of blues and jazz, and then talked about their sound and influences (blues, jazz) while we listened to them. Dragon danced to the jazz.

Learn to meditate – She sat cross-legged on the floor, back straight, hands relaxed. I had her breathe slowly and imagine an object in her mind. I had her flip it around and look at it from every angle, keeping her breathing even and body relaxed.

Make a personality mood board – We looked at the five main personality traits, and decided which fit her best. Then she cut out images that she felt represented each word.
