Week 22 – The Princess and the Frog Results

Pegasus was entranced by this movie. He seemed to understand what was going on and was very sad when a secondary character died. He said that his favourite part was when the second star appeared.

Dance

As per usual, I didn’t do anything specific for this.

Music

His scales are coming along nicely and he willingly practises both his scales and the pieces in the book.

Crochet

We haven’t started this yet.

Basic Information

We are working on the day before and the day after any given day. The months of the year is going well. All months have proper pronounciation now, and we’re working on the month before and after any given month. That’s coming slowly.

We practised the seasons, but he still needs help remembering them in French.

Printing words

We’re working on spacing and keeping the words on the bottom line.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He still has no problems with counting these, and I feel like his numbers have improved.

Math worksheets. He REALLY likes these and had a lot of fun with the more challenging one. He did them both on Monday because he was so excited to do them.

Storytime

We read all four of the French library books again. He did really well and read several pages on his own.

Activity

Cooking rice bowl – He was very enthusiastic about chopping, prepping, and the initial combination, and he really enjoys dumping things into other things. But he has absolutely no interest in sticking around and watching the food cook.

Baking beignets – He really enjoys working with dough, and loves seeing things rise. The initial rolling, he got bored. And then the cutting after, he got even more bored. Thankfully he wasn’t interested in the frying part (because boiling oil!). He loved using the mixer and dumping ingredients into it. (Dragon helped a bit with this one because she wanted to.)

Learn about frogs – We read about different frogs from his sister’s schoolwork, and we watched a couple videos about wood frogs thawing after a freeze. He was tremendously interested in them coming back to life.

Week 21 – Turning Red Results

This movie has extremely fast dialogue. Even I had trouble following. But Pegasus was a trooper and stuck it out. He liked the music and LOVED the panda.

Dance

As per usual, I didn’t do anything specific for this.

Music

His scales are coming along nicely and he willingly practises both his scales and the pieces in the book.

Crochet

We haven’t started this yet.

We practised the seasons, but he still needs help remembering them in French.

Printing words

He is working on leaving spaces between words (kerning). This is easier to do on the computer. 😉 I think he’s getting better though.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He still has no problems with counting these, and I feel like his numbers have improved.

Math worksheets. He REALLY likes these and had a lot of fun with the more challenging one. He did them both on Monday because he was so excited to do them.

Storytime

We got 4 French library books last week. We read 2.

Activity

Take pictures on a nature walk – We discovered that it’s a lot more difficult to go for a walk with boots on and when there are unplowed paths. Pegasus was really dragging on the way home. I felt bad, but it’s not like we could teleport home! He willingingly laid down and rested, but didn’t nap. My pictures of Pegasus taking pictures below:

Pegasus’s pictures: We’re going to work on him tucking his elbows against his body so that they’re not as blurry next time. He did a great job keeping his fingers out of the frame after that first one (difficult to do when wearing gloves that are too big). He had fun playing with the zoom.

Physics experiment – Floating Hearts Static Electricity Activity – The balloon was a big hit (and thankfully popped later than night). He was incredibly enthusiastic about rubbing the balloon on the carpet and then making the pieces of paper jump from the table to the balloon.

Make a concert set list – He had a lot of fun and had definite ideas about what he wanted in his set list. It ended up telling a story – starts out feeling trapped, leaving home, starting over, doing what feels right, and then feeling like it’s home. He typed out the names of the songs (I did the artists), and chose and placed all the pictures in Canva.

Week 20 – Over the Moon Results

Pegasus had not watched this movie yet (under 2yo doesn’t count), so I was excited to see his response to this. He was enthralled.

Dance

As per usual, I didn’t do anything specific for this.

Music

His scales are coming along nicely and he willingly practises both his scales and the pieces in the book.

Crochet

We haven’t started this yet.

Basic Information

We kept up with these throughout the break, so he was still able to repeat these quite well. We are working on the day before and the day after any given day. The months of the year is going well. All months have proper pronounciation now, and we’re working on the month before and after any given month. That’s coming slowly.

We practised the seasons, but he still needs help remembering them in French.

Math worksheets. He REALLY likes these and had a lot of fun with the more challenging one. He did them both on Monday because he was so excited to do them.

Storytime

We got 4 new French library books this week. We read 2.

Activity

Nebula jar – This was one of my favourites from Dragon’s lessons. Pegasus chose yellow, red, and green. If I could go back and encourage him to pick a different last colour, I would. It seems to be making the entire jar a bit murky. On the positive side, we can always do this again after washing out the jar…?

Magnet experiment – We took out two powerful magnets and tested different materials (coaster, magazine, pants, blanket, different plastics, board books, and stacking cups). He also tested how many cups he could nest inside each other before the magnets didn’t hold (the answer is 6 – the magnets held on 5. His hypothesis was that 3 would be the max.)

Make spring rolls – Pegasus enjoys adding flavours, but cooking is not something he enjoys. Baking, however, is another story. Moving forward, I’ll be removing most of the cooking and adding baking. He burned his finger slightly on the pan when stirring, and got very impatient when rolling the rice paper. Dragon took over and she was better at it than Éric was!

Week 19 – Kung Fu Panda Results

Pegasus didn’t remember the movie from before, and he really enjoyed it. He re-enacted large chunks of the movie with his toys later on in the week.

Dance

As per usual, I didn’t do anything specific for this.

Music

His scales are coming along nicely and he willingly practises both his scales and the pieces in the book.

Crochet

We haven’t started this yet.

We practised the seasons, but he still needs help remembering them in French.

Printing words

These worksheets have 2 more words than last semester’s, so I didn’t print the tracing sheet. He appreciated that because he prefers the activities, and many of those have printing involved anyway.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He still has no problems with counting these, and I feel like his numbers have improved. I did not print the tracing sheet, and he had no problems.

Then there was the new math worksheets. He REALLY likes these and had a lot of fun with the more challenging one. I showed him how to count higher than his fingers by drawing lines and he was very enthusiastic.

Storytime

We read the 4 French library books throughout the week.

Activity

Zhezhi – after much deliberation, Pegasus decided to make a frog. We used this set of instructions. I highly recommend origami paper over construction paper, but it will do in a pinch. He needed a bit of help, but only with the tinier folds.

Make noodle soup – the recipe from the lesson plan was used for the soup, with some substitutions. We had some leftover turkey soup broth from the last time we made turkey soup (note that the “we” used here is Éric). Pegasus decided on which flavours to use for the chicken and broth. It was deemed yummy by both kids.

Shrinky dinks – This was a huge hit. He was excited to make them beforehand, and even though his hand hurt from colouring, he wanted to keep working on them. I convinced him that this could take more than one day. Note to people trying this: use paperclips on all four directions or binder clips. It shifts REALLY easily. ALSO note: make sure you’re drawing on the rougher side of the plastic, not the shiny side!! I definitely panicked when it was in the oven; it takes a little longer than it says, and it also folds up quite drastically and then bubbles dramatically before settling.

Week 18 – Meet the Robinsons Results

Pegasus didn’t remember the movie from before. And the day after, he quoted part of the movie (on purpose) in English. But we watched it in French. Which means he translated it in his head and remembered the translation.

Dance

As per usual, I didn’t do anything specific for this.

Music

His scales are coming along nicely and he willingly practises both his scales and the pieces in the book. He also created his own drum kit in the living room.

I taught him about the seasons today. He was excited that he knew the names of some of them.

Printing words

These worksheets have 2 more words than last semester’s. I’m thinking of no longer printing the tracing words, as he seems to be doing just fine with his printing.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He still has no problems with counting these, and I feel like his numbers have improved. Again, I’m thinking of not doing the tracing ones.

Then there was the new math worksheet. It was definitely too easy for him. I explained what he should do for the first one, asking about how many objects he was holding (pencil and eraser), and then he zipped through the rest. I’m hoping the worksheets are more challenging in the future; I haven’t looked ahead, and I’m reusing the ones from Dragon. The suite at the bottom was really easy for him too.

Storytime

We read the 4 French library books.

Activity

Draw an invention – He struggled to come up with a concept for his invention, but he eventually came up with something that he was having trouble with; he’s had a lot of colds recently, and he doesn’t like having a runny nose or ear infections. Thus, the Ear, Nose, Lip Dryer was born! The air goes through the device (from the blank bubble toward the lined bubble) and into the body via the affected area with a push of a button (buttons not depicted).

Make a lava lamp – I feel like this was a little more dramatic than the one that I did with Dragon. Pegasus was very excited about the bubbles, and was also excited to show his sister.

Make book of shapes – this was an activity that one of Dragon’s due date group kids did before the holidays back in 2020. I really liked the idea, so I wanted to do it again with Pegasus. We started by making a list of shapes (formes) and figuring out their names and what colour they should be. He was very decisive that the order should be what we had written down. He printed every word and drew every shape in the book itself, using my template as reference. He loved making a checkmark on the list after completing each page. The progression of his interest in this activity was… interesting, for the lack of a better word. He was invested while we made the list, he didn’t want to start the book, he groaned and complained through the first two pages, he zoomed through the rest, constantly begging to work on his book, and then at the end, he didn’t want to show it off to anyone. I don’t know. It was strange. He was fine with me posting about it though.

Week 17 – The Grinch Results

Pegasus absolutely adored this, although he pretends he doesn’t know what was going on.

Dance

I haven’t been doing much formally for this one. I’ll put music on and he’ll dance to it unprompted. (repeated from last week)

Music

He has been diligent about practising his scales and doing the exercises from the book. He also says out loud what the scale letters are as he plays them.

Crochet

We’re on break for now.

Basic Information

We alternated between listening to videos for the days of the week and months of the year (M, W, F), and attempting to put them in order with the pieces of paper (days on Tuesday, months on Thursday). He sang along unprompted. He didn’t need any prompting with the days of the week this week.

Printing words

He enjoys doing this activity and completed it on the second day this week. He’s working on making his letters smaller and more contained. I’m trying to get him to put more of a space between his words.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He did well on his counting. He asked me to trace a 6 in the air, and even then had some issues with it. We tried again, with it written down, and he did much better.

Storytime

We read one of the French books. He did well.

Activity

Finish zine (put everything together) – He took out the background of the cast and placed them in his zine. Then we used the cutter to remove the edges and he folded it into a complete zine.

Bake cookies – I wasn’t sure we were going to have time for this, but we squeezed it in on Saturday. He didn’t have the patience to put them on the cookie sheet, but I can’t say that I blame him!

Finish previous week’s projects – We completed the buttons that were Christmas gifts, as well as write on the gift tags and wrap the presents.

Week 16 – Scrooge Results

I had forgotten how beautiful this movie was, and the French dub was superb. I’m extremely picky about dubs, and I’ve never had any complaints about a Netflix dub into French. Pegasus liked the movie a lot, but he is familiar with the general story.

Dance

I haven’t been doing much formally for this one. I’ll put music on and he’ll dance to it unprompted. (repeated from last week)

Printing words

He enjoys doing this activity and completed it on the fourth day this week. He’s working on making his letters smaller and more contained.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He did well on his counting. He asked me to trace in the air a 6 and 7, but wrote them no problem.

Storytime

We didn’t read the two weeks before last’s French books. Sickness took over our household. I’m feeling well enough to read aloud now, so we should be able to read them in week 17.

Activity

Make toilet paper roll art – Pegasus chose the same figure that Dragon had done – the snowman. Fortunately, we had just enough little balls, and he liked that they were different colours. I learned from the previous attempt, and punched holes into the top of the roll for the pipe cleaner to go through to that it would be easier to glue.

Make zine (plan and backgrounds) – he is incredibly enthusiastic about this. He typed in the words to find the background pictures, decided on his cast, and planned out which parts of the story to put into the zine. Then on Friday, he built the backgrounds into the zine in Canva.

Week 15 – Klaus Results

Pegasus enjoyed this movie. It is not one he knows, so I was interested to see how much he understood from it. However, everyone is sick this week, so I’m not sure how well that worked. He says he has no idea what happened, but I’m not sure if it’s the French or the sickness that prevented him from understanding.

Dance

I haven’t been doing much formally for this one. I’ll put music on and he’ll dance to it unprompted. (repeated from last week)

Counting objects/math-type activities

He did well on his counting. He needed help with his 5 and 7.

Storytime

We didn’t read week before last’s French books. Sickness took over our household.

Activity

Draw button designs, make buttons – we didn’t manage to make the actual buttons this week, so that will have to happen later on when we’re healthier. But he did do the drawings, and was very thoughtful about what to draw for each person.

Make Xmas tags from old Xmas cards – this didn’t happen this week due to sickness. We’ll do it later on when we’re healthier.

Week 14 – Arthur Christmas Results

Pegasus loved this movie. He’s also familiar with it. He was extremely excited to write his letter to Santa.

Dance

I haven’t been doing much formally for this one. I’ll put music on and he’ll dance to it unprompted. (repeated from last week)

Counting objects/math-type activities

He did well on his counting. He didn’t need help with the printing of the numbers.

Storytime

We didn’t read last week’s French books. Sickness took over our household.

Activity

Write letter to Santa – Santa sent the letters for both kids to the printer at the end of last week. Pegasus was super excited, but reluctantly agreed to wait until Monday to fill it out. He was very enthusiastic about writing it and worked very hard to fill it out.

Geography – we sat down with an atlas and I explained how to use it and how everything affects everything else. Pegasus was very enthusiastic and remembered the Rockies long enough to tell Éric when he got home from work. While sitting on my lap, he thought that the US being called Canada’s pants was hilarious. 😉

Bake cookies – we have 8 types of cookies we want to bake this season. This week, we made my grandmother’s shortbread. I had planned on making a second cookie on the Friday, but both kids were sick, so we left it at just the one for this week. He already understands about the measurements, but I got to explain how to be precise (to my standards). We got a little messy. 😛

Week 13 – Raya and the Last Dragon Results

Pegasus doesn’t really remember Raya very well, as evidenced by his confusion about why the word “dragon” was one of his printing words this week.

Dance

I haven’t been doing much formally for this one. I’ll put music on and he’ll dance to it unprompted. (repeated from last week)

Music

He has been diligent about practising his scales and doing the exercise from the book. He also says out loud what the scale letters are as he plays them.

Crochet

Pegasus completed the poncho this week! He worked very hard and is very happy with the end result.

He enjoys doing this activity and completed it on the third day this week.

Counting objects/math-type activities

He did well on his counting. He needed me to write a 5, but only asked for a 6 traced in the air, and he knew what a 7 looked like.

Storytime

We read last week’s French books on Monday at the dentist while we were waiting. Then we got new French books after the dentist. He learned some new words, like ‘dans’ and ‘ciel’.

Activity

Plan a menu for Boun’s Shrimp Boat – I felt like this was too limiting, so instead, we made a menu for Pegasus’s Restaurant! He had fun planning the menu items (I wrote them down verbatim) and then I helped him search for images in Canva. He shrank them and placed them in the appropriate places.

Make fruit jerky – This turned out pretty well. It was tasty, but we had a hard time flattening it so that it had even consistency. Pegasus did pretty much everything himself, too, which is excellent!

Make celebration banner – We changed this to an invitation to the opening of his restaurant. I wanted to explain how to keep design consistent in theme across similar products.
