    Winging It
    by Jen Desmarais

A wedding and a summer camp that Tommy and Carter are never going to forget.

Tommy discovers magic exists, his boyfriend is a rock giant, and his sister is marrying one of the leaders of a supernatural community called Aetherborn.

Carter learns to navigate an in-person relationship, introducing Tommy to the magical world, and being involved in his Ariki’s wedding.

Both boys need to build their confidence in each other, themselves, and their relationship. The Door Tech summer camp seems to be the perfect way to do that, until they get magically transported to the not-so-fictional world of Everdome. In this realm of Domed continents floating in space, winged beasts, and new cultures, the boys will have to overcome challenges beyond anything they’ve seen before.

The only way they, and their relationship, can survive is if they start Winging It!

    The Copper Tarnish
    by Éric Desmarais

Until last summer, I was the most popular girl in school. Then I was accused of killing my boyfriend when he disappeared. Luckily, he didn’t die, but he wasn’t the same when he came back. Murder accusations are nothing compared to the rumours that I kissed said boyfriend’s sister. That rumour proved to be the real killer for my popularity.

Now everyone hates me except the gorgeous new girl who seems determined to ruin any chances of being popular by hanging out with me. There’s also a cute soldier hanging around my mom’s diner and freaky sounds in the woods.

Autumn definitely won’t be dull. All I need to do is graduate…and stay alive.

    How Jen Plots her Novels

    Step 1: Panic!

Step 2: Write 3 sentences that cover the main 3 beats of the story; beginning, middle, end.

Step 2a: (Because I forgot about this one and don’t want to renumber) Write out the character info for the main characters and secondary characters. The main characters should include descriptions of themselves as well as their motivations, weaknesses, strengths, nicknames, etc. Anything I can think of to make them who they are. Secondary characters only need descriptions at this point.

Step 3: Write out everything I can think of in jot note form for each beat.

Step 4: Ignore all of that and start a new document.

Step 5: Break the novel into the 3 parts. Decide how many chapters I want in each, and how many words will be in each chapter. (I usually say 3k as an approximate, 8 chapters in each part.)

Step 6: Copy all the jot notes into their appropriate chapter.

Step 7: Make sure everything flows properly. Fill in any missing information. Add red herrings and foreshadowing at appropriate points.

    Optional
Step 8: Count the high action scenes (fight, sex, whatever) and make sure they’re spread out decently.

Not listed: Ask Éric for help at every step above so he can reassure me that I do, in fact, know what I’m doing.

    Book Mood Board

I had fun looking for pictures that made me think of the book Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers.

And I thought, why not share it with you?

Mood board of Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers. Pictures of a black motorcycle, a stargate from Stargate SG1, a metal pineapple, a cottage, a street sign indicating Westmeath is to the right, a fun-looking mushroom, a stuffed bear, two croissants and a coffee, and a dessert pizza surround the front cover of the book, art by pinkpiggy93, layout by Nathan and Mackenzie.

    Summary

Kennedy Fairfield just graduated in the class of 2002, and is now trying to find her purpose in life, or at least a job in her field. When she saves Jason Johnson, the leader of a secret Community of supernatural people called Aetherborn, from an attempted assassination, they embark on a whirlwind epic romance and adventure.

For Kennedy and Jason to discover why people are disappearing in time to save her friends, they’ll have to face teleporting assassins, grumpy wizards, gossiping hags, mafia robots, and secret military groups, all in the city of Westmeath, Ontario, which has more secrets than residents.

The first book of four in The Gates of Westmeath series.

    Spotify Music Playlist

Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers has some pretty great music in it, so I made a spotify playlist of all the songs, in the order they appear within the book.

Do you think you can figure out what happens during each song?

    Songs in order of appearance

    • “Ordinary Day” by Vanessa Carlton
    • “Lapdance” by N.E.R.D.
    • “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” by Barenaked Ladies
    • “I Want You” by Savage Garden
    • “Let me Entertain You” by Robbie Williams
    • “The Nearness of You” by Norah Jones
    • “Bumblebee” by Aqua
    • “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera
    • “Ballroom Blitz” by Sweet
    • “Cartoon Heroes” by Aqua
    • “Deep Enough” by Live
    • “A New Day Has Come” by Celine Dion
    • “If The World Crashes Down” by Enrique Iglesias

One of the first things we did when writing this book was build a 2002 playlist.

I had already started writing my first chapter, and Kennedy had entered a bakery. I thought, shouldn’t there be music playing? What music would have been popular in September 2002?

Cue a post on Facebook asking about our friends’ favourite artists from twenty years ago. (Twenty? What?)

We bought a bunch of CDs to supplement what we already owned, and built an epic playlist to listen to while we wrote to add atmosphere. An entire scene in chapter 5 wouldn’t have been there without this playlist.
