Proof of Concept – The Puzzles of Everdome

Hello Friends, Family, and Fans;

Every once in a while I get an idea for a novel but I’m not sure how well it’ll transition from brain to page. So I take the story out for a test drive. I call it a Proof-of-Concept and wrote about it here.

My family has been doing digital escape rooms for a while and I got an idea while writing Elizabeth 5, about a combination of an escape room and a dungeon dive but as a reality TV show.

Since I’d already written a book as a reality show, I figured this would be the perfect concept to re-visit Everdome.

It’ll probably be a long while before I get to it, but I’m excited to go back.

She stood on the highest hill in the Grey Havens and looked over the fields of the dead. Despite the vanquishing of the Corrupter, this dome still writhed with undead horrors. Mostly shambling corpses that projected illusions of loved ones, but there were darker things hiding in the golden cities. Vampires, necromancers, and the last of the great beasts.

Just the idea of Thincas, the beast of two faces, sent a shiver down Queen Jasmine’s spine. She put her hand to her sword and felt the comforting weight.

“That’s not going to help you against the dead,” Kathryn said glibly.

“This isn’t any ordinary blade. It’s been blessed by twelve priests, the Sisters, and Myrddin himself. Since this is as much your fault as it was the old gods, I think you should be less flippant.”

Giving a withering look toward the Queen, Kathryn said, “Child, I have lived and seen things you have no concept for. I watched as Everworld exploded and became Everdome. I was there when this dome turned from gold to grey, and I have been trying to find a way to fix it since. I have travelled the realms and universe. If swords, honour, and military arrogance could fix it, it would have been done by better sovereigns than you.”

The Queen advanced toward the other woman, both the only splotches of colour other than the golden ruins. Their warm brown skin seemed to brighten the area. The Queen’s armour shone bright silver and Kathryn’s purple coat seemed to mirror the difference between them.

“Oh for fuck’s sake. I thought travelling with women meant I could avoid the pissing contests.” They turned to the shorter woman with wild brownish red hair. She was dressed in brown leather armour and had more weapons than most people could count. “You’re both idiots and you’re both right. We can’t do this without Kathryn, and we can’t do this without Jasmine. Get over yourselves and get along or we’re not just going to die, we’re going to become like them.” Es’Sem the warrior queen of the Wild Nations said, and the other women stepped away from each other and looked suitably cowed.

The three companions walked in silence while the sun rose, or more accurately the clouds became less black and more grey. The smell was horrific; a combination of sickly sweet and rotting. They each sucked on a strong mint candy to avoid gagging.

They approached the walls of the city of the dead, feeling the warmth radiating from its golden glow. There was a small strip of wildflowers and grass that grew along the walls. The walked as close as they could without trampling the only life they’d seen in three days and reached the great gates.

The city had been Everdome’s greatest mausoleum, where kings and heroes were laid to rest. It was also the site of a yearly patronage to honour the dead. When the Corruption had taken the land, smaller versions of the mausoleum had been created in all the domes.

When they reached the gates, all three women swore. They were sealed and had a large inscription, “The way is shut. The city was made for the dead, and the Dead keep it, until thirteen more heroes come to our aid.” Below the inscription was the sign of Elric the Mad.

“Elric, that plagiarizing ass! I regret ever loving that man or letting him read my copy of Lord of the Rings,” Kathryn spat. “What does it mean by thirteen more?”

Queen Jasmine shook her head and answered, “It seems we, again, need help from Earth to save Everdome.”

Pakaha Street Skewers from Winging It

“I’ll get veggies. There’s a shish-ka-bab barbeque vendor beside the meat pie,” Elyse said.

This would also work really well with steak.

Ingredients

Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 medium shallots, finely chopped
  • 1-inch piece lemongrass
  • 1 cup soup broth
  • 2-inch piece fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp lemon thyme
  • 1 tsp celery salt
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Skewer

  • Peppers cut in 1.5 inch squares
  • Button Mushrooms or large mushrooms cut in half
  • Zucchini cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat until hot, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the shallots and lemongrass and cook for 2 minutes, stirring often.
  2. Add the soup broth, the grated or finely chopped ginger, then turn the heat up to high. Boil off the soup broth by half, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the lemon juice and lemon thyme, one tablespoon of celery salt, and taste for salt—add some table salt if you need it.
  3. Pour the sauce into a food processor and blitz it until it becomes a thick puree; it should look a bit like a light green mayo, as everything will emulsify.
  4. Place on pre-prepared skewers with vegetables with a sauce brush.
  5. Cook skewers on the preheated grill until vegetables are tender and lightly charred, turning and basting vegetables with remaining sauce occasionally, 10 to 15 minutes.

Pakaha Balls (Vegetarian) from Winging It

“We found a stall selling deep fried balls of meat and peas,” Elyse interrupted them, bringing them each a battered ball on a stick. “It seemed pretty popular at dinnertime.”

“And since it’s dinner again for us, it makes sense,” Carter finished her thought. He took a bite and moaned. “That is delicious. We need this recipe for Jason.”

Although these are vegetarian, you could use shredded chicken or ground meat inside of them.

Filling

  • 4 medium (500 grams) potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
  • 1 tablespoon ginger minced or paste
  • 1 to 2 green chilies chopped (optional)
  • 1/2 cup green peas (boiled or frozen)
  • 1 teaspoon Pakaha Frienze (Substitute Garam Masala)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

Breading

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel, halve and boil potatoes in a pot of water, until fork tender (not mushy).
  2. Heat a pan with oil or ghee, add ginger & green chilies. Fry until ginger smells aromatic, for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  3. Stir in the green peas and saute for 2 mins.
  4. Add garam masala, cumin powder, celery salt, and paprika. Saute for 30 seconds.
  5. Stir in the potatoes and sprinkle salt. Mix and saute for 2 to 3 mins.
  6. Set aside to cool.
  7. Mush mixture to be chunky (not mash).
  8. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  9. Scoop mixture with tablespoons to make balls (Cool or freeze)
  10. Prepare breading by adding breadcrumbs, cinnamon, and brown sugar in a bowl
  11. Beat eggs in separate bowl
  12. In third put the flour with some salt and pepper.
  13. Roll balls in flour, egg wash, then roll in the breading mixture.
  14. Deep fry at 350 degrees fahrenheit for 2 minutes or until golden.

    Winging It
    by Jen Desmarais

A wedding and a summer camp that Tommy and Carter are never going to forget.

Tommy discovers magic exists, his boyfriend is a rock giant, and his sister is marrying one of the leaders of a supernatural community called Aetherborn.

Carter learns to navigate an in-person relationship, introducing Tommy to the magical world, and being involved in his Ariki’s wedding.

Both boys need to build their confidence in each other, themselves, and their relationship. The Door Tech summer camp seems to be the perfect way to do that, until they get magically transported to the not-so-fictional world of Everdome. In this realm of Domed continents floating in space, winged beasts, and new cultures, the boys will have to overcome challenges beyond anything they’ve seen before.

The only way they, and their relationship, can survive is if they start Winging It!

    The Copper Tarnish
    by Éric Desmarais

Until last summer, I was the most popular girl in school. Then I was accused of killing my boyfriend when he disappeared. Luckily, he didn’t die, but he wasn’t the same when he came back. Murder accusations are nothing compared to the rumours that I kissed said boyfriend’s sister. That rumour proved to be the real killer for my popularity.

Now everyone hates me except the gorgeous new girl who seems determined to ruin any chances of being popular by hanging out with me. There’s also a cute soldier hanging around my mom’s diner and freaky sounds in the woods.

Autumn definitely won’t be dull. All I need to do is graduate…and stay alive.
