Éric’s 2022 New Year’s Resolutions

Hello 2022! (Glances around nervously)

2021 was a surreal year, both because I finished writing 4 books and because it started to sink in that this whole pandemic is going to last longer than I expected.

Here’s to hoping 2022 is better.

My resolutions are not breakable promises, but goals that I hope to achieve.

Changing the Outlook Heart and Brain Comics The Awkward Yeti

Writing

1. Write a monthly serial story

It’s going to be my 9th year in a row doing this and I’m really excited for this year’s story. Get ready to see the beginning of the Aetherverse.

2. Write Guise and Dolls with Jen

After over a decade of waiting, I’m finally going to write this one. Jen’s going to help me and I can’t wait. This will be a more complicated book for us than those we’ve written before because we don’t have an outline in advance.

3. Finish Copper Tarnish

I started this book in November 2016. It’s time to finish it and get the darned story out of my head.

4. Write book 3 of The Gates of Westmeath with Jen

This is super ambitious, but we managed it last year so I’m hoping.

5. Keep Working on FADDS

I’m loving this system and I think it’s a few years (at the rate I’m going) before it’s ready to submit. I’d like to do a cleanup of the monster rules and maybe a reread of the spelling and grammar, but as long as I’m adding stuff, I’m good.

JenEric Designs and Coffee

6. Ensure 5+ days of updates

I’m going to do my best to keep our 5 day a week schedule. We’re in a nice little groove, so I think it’ll go okay. If things change, I’ll let you know.

7. Write a movie review each week

I’ve managed it two years now and I think it’s feasible to do it again. People have told me they like the reviews, so I’ll continue.

8. Design and release a new flavour and redesign Green Apple

In theory, Ottawa ComicCon is supposed to happen in September. I’m not sure what this or future variants will mean for events, but I need to get ready. I’d like to get these done and roast appropriately.

Personal

9. Read 5 Books

I failed miserably at this last year. I’ve lost my dedicated reading time and I need to find another. I love reading and I miss it.

10. Be More Patient

Every year I get a little better and I’m trying really hard not to yell as much. Hopefully I can keep getting calmer and move more towards gentle parenting.

11. Don’t over stress

This will probably be a fail but I need to learn how to destress. I have minor depression and when I spiral I get very stressed, defensive, and insecure. It’s not fun and I need to learn when it happens and treat it like a health issue instead of noticing after I get snippy with my wife.

Beyond that, I also don’t react well physically when I get stressed and I need to learn how to destress for my health.

12. Practice bass or ukulele 2-3 times a week

I got a beautiful Kala U-bass for Christmas and need to use it. I’m hoping for daily, but that won’t happen. I love making pretty noises and I know it helps me destress.

So after 4 years of slowly getting worse at my resolutions, I have made this ambitious list. Let’s hope I can do it and no matter what, I know I’ll have something to show at the end.

I wish for you all you need to complete your resolutions.

Stay safe and be kind,

Éric

Encanto – JenEric Movie Review

How This Works – Read Other Reviews

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2021 film Encanto.

Story

I was expecting a completely different story structure and was pleasantly surprised not to have another fetch quest Disney movie. Well crafted and put together, everything flowed from one scene to the other. I look forward to rewatching and seeing the foreshadowing.

Score: 1

Characters

At first I was a little annoyed at how stereotypical the characters were, but as the story progressed, I loved that it was explained and used for the story.

Mirabel is an intelligent, flawed, and fantastic character. The rest of the characters were just as good.

Score: 1

Dialogue

The dialogue was spot on for sibling and family dynamics. It was, however, overshadowed and often replaced by the songs.

Score: 0.5

Visuals and Music

The level of detailing in in every frame is awe-inspiring. Beyond the animation details, the colours, locations, and variety of character models was truly impressive.

The music was the star of the show. Each song told a story and pushed the main plot ahead. Inspired and captivating.

Score: 1

Fun

The physical humour, action, songs, and beautiful animation kept the kids and adults glued to the screen. My vision got blurry with tears a few times, but it was a the good kind. The kids were singing the songs as they went to bed.

Score: 1

Overall

An amazing animated musical with everything to make it a classic. The animation, locations, characters, songs, and humour were all impressive. Definitely worth a watch or ten.

Final Score: 4.5 stars out of 5

Guitar Lessons Part 22

Nov 5: Short today

My daughter spent some extra time at virtual school today, so I only had 15 minutes to play this morning. I played the songs I’ve been working on in my learning app and did pretty well, and then I played my song.

I think I’ll work on memorizing the wedding song this afternoon, since Tommy and Carter’s book 2 has caught up to Kennedy and Jason’s book 2 and I don’t want to start writing ahead.

Time to start thinking about what I’m going to write next for Kennedy and Jason. Should be a fun one! 😉

Nov 6: Short ukulele

Today kinda got away from us. I played a couple ukulele songs with my husband tonight before we put the kids to bed.

Nov 7: Full size

I played guitar at my parent’s today, which meant using my dad’s full size guitar for the first time since early July.

O.M.G.

What a difference!

I am so happy that I chose to go with my ¾, and that I went a bit more expensive and got the Fender because the neck is narrower, because wow my fingers hurt from the stretch!

This also means I played for a bigger audience than just my husband and kids.

Ngl, it was hard. At least I could blame any problems on the larger guitar!

I might do it again next week.

I could use the practice.

Nov 8: Back to normal

Going back to my guitar was so nice after playing my dad’s giant one last night.

The sounds are different too, because the strings are different.

I like mine better. Shh, don’t tell him.

It was nice to go back to normal.

Nov 9: Noel

My daughter requested I play Jingle bells today.

You know, it’s not as annoying when you’re learning how to play it rather than listening to it.

Sorry husband!

So after practicing the songs on my learning app and playing Get to Know You, I played a bunch of Christmas songs.

My fingers are really getting a workout, switching from G to D, let me tell you!!

I’m sure I’ll get faster at it soon, right?

Nov 10: Interesting thought

I played my usual learning app, my song, and a few other songs.

But peeps?

My 5yo daughter has been trying to memorize my song?

And she almost has all of it?

And you have no idea how it makes me feel that my daughter cares so much about this song that I wrote that she is memorizing it.

I almost cry every time she sings it to me.

Resolution Review 2021

Hello My Digital Imaginary Friends,

Well this has been quite the year. Lots of ups and downs and that’s just the stock market and Covid count…. Sorry.

Let’s dive right in and see how I did this year. I did wear pants, but that’s not a resolution, unfortunately.

Least I Could Do Beginnings and the tyranny of pants

Writing

1. Write a Monthly Serial Story (Sucess)

This year’s story was awesome. I can’t wait to write more in this universe, but that will have to wait. Check out Diamond Stars and the Galactic Heist now.

2. Start and write half of SUPER MYSTERY BOOK PROJECT Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers. (Success)

This went AMAZING. We finished the book in March and received a contract with Renaissance at the beginning of August. THEN WE DID IT AGAIN! We wrote a short story collection AND the sequel this year. That’s 3 books!!!!

3. Write Another Hal Story (Fail)

I haven’t written another Sun Speaker universe story, unfortunately. However, technically,  Diamond Stars and the Galactic Heist is part of that universe. Still doesn’t count though.

JenEric Designs and Coffee

4. Ensure 5+ days of updates (Success)

Yay, we made it. Another full year of updates. I hope you’ve enjoyed them as much as we have.

Editing and Marketing

5. Start Editing Dinosaur Road Trip (Fail)

I think I’m going to give up on this and maybe do a partial rewrite in the future. It’s just such a personal and emotional book that I haven’t had the energy to do it.

6. Keep Working on FADDS (Success)

I haven’t done as much as I would have liked this Fall, but the system is working great and I look forward to seeing what else it can do.

Personal

7. Read 15 Books (Fail)

If reading Little Quack Counts and Mickey Santa’s Helper count as books then I’m golden, but other than that, I’ve written more books this year than I’ve read… sigh. I read 3 books.

8. Play more games with the kids (Sucess)

Not enough board games, but maybe the 2 year old will be willing this coming year. We have finished 2 video games together though and Santa brought us the Finding Dory Disney Infinity game, so we’re good.

9. Be More Patient (Draw)

In July, I wrote, “I still yell a little too much and I’m a little too stressed. I need to chill. I’m doing a little better, but I still need to work on it.” That’s still accurate. I’m terrible when I’m tired or stressed… Hopefully next year, but I am trying and getting better.

10. Keep pressing my doctor to find out what those attacks were in November 2020 (Fail)

In November I had some serious health issues. I had massive cramping in my lower left abdomen, fever, weakness, nausea, and fatigue. It happened twice in November and both times faded away.

I chose to not deal with this. I had another attack in December of this year and I was able to treat it by slowing down. I definitely think they are related to my IBS and flare up during stressful times. I’m going to deal with it by managing stress and taking it easy. When the pandemic is over, I’ll consider talking to my doctor.

Results

I guess that means I have 55%. Room to improve in 2022, especially the reading one.

  • 5 Success
  • 4 Fail
  • 1 Draw

Addendum

Something that was in last year and the year before’s list that I didn’t put in this year’s was Finish Book 4 of Elizabeth. When Jen and I finished Assassins!, I learned that my publisher was scheduling for 2 years ahead and the vain part of me didn’t want to miss a year, so I pushed to finish the book. I finished in time and submitted. Hopefully I’ll hear something in the new year.

The Knight Before Christmas – JenEric Movie Review

How This Works – Read Other Reviews

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2019 film The Knight Before Christmas.

Story

The story is Christmas-y and happy. They avoid awkward tropes and lean into the cutesy cheese. The least believable part was that a teacher could afford the property taxes on such a massive house.

Score: 1

Characters

The characters are sweet and heartwarming. They are also completely unrealistic. Brooke is a teacher, but throws money around like an heiress. She’s overly trusting and kind of naive.

Sir Cole is anachronistic in every way. His knight’s code is pure Romantic reconstruction, he speaks modern English, his armour is off a little and his sword is styled more like WIlliam the Lionheart than William the Third.

The rest of the cast are adorable and interesting.

Score: 0.5

Dialogue

Pure Christmas movie cheese and I loved every part of it. Once you get over the fact that the historical characters are not talking in middle English, it’s freaking adorable.

Score: 1

Visuals and Music

The cinematography is okay and the setting is picturesque. The leads are pretty to look at and the clothes are fantastic.

The music isn’t amazing, but it’s fun.

Score: 0.5

Fun

It kept the interest of the entire family and was a lot of easy fun.

Score: 1

Overall

This is a cheesy, angst-free, lovely holiday movie with a great cast and a lot of cuteness.

Final Score: 4 Stars out of 5

Guitar Lessons Part 21

Oct 30: Ukulele time!

We bought an album by Cody Simpson the other day and I’ve been kinda obsessed, so today I played ukulele again (his song La Da Dee is played on uke and it just doesn’t sound right on guitar).

I also switched my learning app over to ukulele, just to see the differences. That was a genius idea! It was so interesting to see how the exact same song was at a different level.

I dreamt about the wedding song all night, however, I don’t have it memorized yet, so it wasn’t very productive.

Oct 31: Happy Halloween

I picked up the tenor ukulele and strummed a few chords while my husband was putting together a new-to-us bookcase.

That was the extent of my playing today.

Good night!

Nov 1: Holiday music

It’s November! Which means I can start playing Christmas music! Don’t come at me, I’m not going to make you listen to it.

I will subject my family to it for half an hour every day, though.

We’re not going to be listening to our Christmas music playlist until we finish our book, so I gotta get my holiday fix somehow!

Makes me kinda want to set a book during the holidays though…

Sorry, I tangented.

I found my Christmas flute music book, and in the centre was a set of photocopied guitar music! So I played that. It was great. I need to figure out how to strum for each song.

That’ll be fun to do.

Nov 2: Singing along

My learning app was having issues hearing my guitar today. It was very odd.

I played a bunch of songs that my daughter could sing along with me today. She’s very enthusiastic and I love it.

She even sang along with the song I wrote.

Seriously one of the best feelings in the world.

Nov 3: Emotions

My daughter has been learning about emotions in school and how to describe what she’s feeling.

I am incredibly happy with how my guitar playing went today. I attempted to play some of the more complicated songs in my learning app, with some success. I played the songs in the binder I found, which makes me REALLY happy. I also played the Christmas songs I found, and tried to play the chords a little smoother, with moderate success. And I played my song, which went really well. My song makes me happy.

Overall, I am very happy with how my guitar playing is going.

Nov 4: Not much to say

I played guitar this morning. I did very well in my learning app, better than the last couple days. I played my song. I played requests from my kids.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m writing chapter 7 in Tommy and Carter’s book 2, and there’s a performance that I’m almost finished writing and I’m looking forward to finishing it.

Chapter 12

I was taken as a child from my parents, raised by a military cult, trained to be one of the galaxy’s greatest killers. The greatest fear any Black-Sun soldier has is of the Sun Speakers and their terrifying powers.

Because of all that, there was a large part of me that was convinced we would fail. That the physical and magical might of Black-Sun would come and stop us like a parent with an unruly toddler.

We arrived at home base and I felt them before the sensors started beeping. “We have company,” I said and jumped on the sensors in the ship. Diamond and Flint had run off to the satellite arrays to upload the information on the matter replicator, the anti-Sun Speaker device, and Black-Sun stealing babies.

“Ah and I haven’t dusted the living room yet,” quipped Onyx.

Trying not to get distracted by the mental image of him dusting in very little clothing, I concentrated on the terminal in front of me. The sensors were telling me that there were two Black-Sun destroyers in orbit.

Heading to the pilot’s chair, Sphene said, “Only two. I guess we’re not that important. If we launch now, we can maybe lead them away from home base.”

I was going to agree when a wave of nausea made me regret being born. “Wait!” I managed to say without gagging.

Putting the sensor view onto the ship’s main screen showed something weird. A small black mass coalesced into a ship. The Mountain’s voice came over the coms, “You’re having a party and didn’t invite us? That’s just rude.”

The Black-Sun should have fired on him the moment he arrived, but they hesitated, looking at the patchwork and frankly ugly ship. That gave the Mountain and his crew enough time to fire two bombs at the destroyers.

The bombs hit the Black-Sun ships and instead of exploding they stuck to the hull for a moment before imploding. “Where did you get Plasma-Gravity Bombs?” I asked in disbelief as the mass of the ships was crushed into a dense ball of metal.

Sheepishly, the Mountain said, “I’m a scavenger. Blackbird and his crew are dead; they didn’t need all their stuff in that secret base.” He paused before adding, “I brought a whole bunch of stuff for Ronnie. Just ’cause her old man was a dick doesn’t mean she should suffer.” I doubted that Ronnie was suffering, from what Diamond said they were both extremely happy together.

“Thank you,” I said earnestly.

“It’s only a matter of time before more Black-Sun show up.” He stopped for a second and I saw that Diamond had managed to send the message out. The Mountain started to swear.

The message went out and wherever it went, it was spread as far as possible. Soon the entire system had the tools to fend for themselves and defend themselves against Black-Sun.

We all braced for a fight, but they’d relied on the Sun Speakers and their psychic powers for so long they didn’t know how to fight regular people. When the military turned against them, they retreated to the edges of the system where they had their bases.

The acolytes of the sun were dealt with in bloody and terrifying ways. Regular doctors started taking care of childbirth and infant mortality dropped to nearly nothing. That meant a lot more mouths to feed, but the matter replicators made sure that wasn’t a problem.

We stayed with Diamond, whose real name was Ruby, for the first month. She came to see me while I was doing upgrades on the Revenge.

“Everything okay, Dia—Ruby?” I asked.

She put the Diamond Stars holo-emitter next to me and said, “I’d be honoured if you would take on the mantle of Diamond.”

Every night since we’d sent out the broadcast, I’d had nightmares. I tried to convince myself they were just dreams, but I knew they were psychic visions.

“I can’t,” I said.

“Bullshit. I see in your face that there’s something you need to do and no matter what it is, you can do it as Diamond.”

“I think I’m meant to leave the system,” I said.

That took her a few seconds to process. “Well, this system has had Diamond Stars for several centuries. Time we shared with the universe.”

I put my hand on the device and thought of all the people who’d used it and the hope they’d brought to the system. “Thank you.” I turned and hugged her. “Thank you for everything.”

“This ship is called Revenge because the first Diamond wanted revenge on Black-Sun for everything they’d done. The name is a promise and it’s your turn to fulfill it.” With that, she walked off the ship.

I didn’t know why a Sun from so far away had chosen me to be its speaker, or why I’d gotten so lucky as to be kidnapped by this crew, but I was thankful.

It took me a few more months to upgrade the ship to both survive deep space and defend itself. When I was done, I dressed the part of Diamond Stars and went to say goodbye to Ruby.

“Diamond,” she greeted me. “It’s been an honour getting to know you. Are you going to tell the doctor?”

I shook my head and said, “He deserves a better, and longer, life than I can offer.”

“Good luck,” she said and I left.

On the bridge, I closed the hatches and ran through the preflight checks. I felt a pang of guilt and loneliness as I took off. They’d be better off without me and my crusade.

With stealth activated, I took the closest jump gate to the system’s edge. It would take a little time for me to reach the Black-Sun fleet that was massing. My plan was to follow them, piggybacking on their wormhole, and help whoever they were attacking.

I was half way when I started smelling something delicious. I walked towards the kitchen and said, “Whoever you are, you’re obviously not Galactic Police or Army. They don’t use that much garlic in their tomato sauce.”

Onyx turned to me as I walked into the kitchen, “Oh shut up. You love my spaghetti sauce.”

“I do,” I said before adding softly, “You shouldn’t be here.”

Sphene looked up from her datapad and said, “You’re an idiot, Diamond.”

“What my little sister means is that you’re not getting rid of us that easily.” Onyx walked over to me and gently smacked my shoulder. “Stop being all dramatic and come sit down for dinner. We’re family now.” He bent over and kissed my cheek. “Please don’t try to leave me again. I don’t think my heart could take it.”

I took his beautiful face in my hands and pulled him into a deep, passionate kiss. “I love you, too.” Somewhere between the smell and the kiss, I’d started crying.

We were going to help fight the most powerful people I knew of, but we would do it together and together there was hope.

I am Diamond Stars, I’m a Sun Speaker of Sol, and I’m going to make sure Black-Sun knows the name of my ship.
