Someone won a prize in the masquerade – and with the level of detail on the embroidery, I’m not surprised! What cosplay is this? Anyone know?

“We found a stall selling deep fried balls of meat and peas,” Elyse interrupted them, bringing them each a battered ball on a stick. “It seemed pretty popular at dinnertime.”
“And since it’s dinner again for us, it makes sense,” Carter finished her thought. He took a bite and moaned. “That is delicious. We need this recipe for Jason.”
Although these are vegetarian, you could use shredded chicken or ground meat inside of them.

Despite all that, what four characters appear in both books?

Good Luck!

A wedding and a summer camp that Tommy and Carter are never going to forget.
Tommy discovers magic exists, his boyfriend is a rock giant, and his sister is marrying one of the leaders of a supernatural community called Aetherborn.
Carter learns to navigate an in-person relationship, introducing Tommy to the magical world, and being involved in his Ariki’s wedding.
Both boys need to build their confidence in each other, themselves, and their relationship. The Door Tech summer camp seems to be the perfect way to do that, until they get magically transported to the not-so-fictional world of Everdome. In this realm of Domed continents floating in space, winged beasts, and new cultures, the boys will have to overcome challenges beyond anything they’ve seen before.
The only way they, and their relationship, can survive is if they start Winging It!
Until last summer, I was the most popular girl in school. Then I was accused of killing my boyfriend when he disappeared. Luckily, he didn’t die, but he wasn’t the same when he came back. Murder accusations are nothing compared to the rumours that I kissed said boyfriend’s sister. That rumour proved to be the real killer for my popularity.
Now everyone hates me except the gorgeous new girl who seems determined to ruin any chances of being popular by hanging out with me. There’s also a cute soldier hanging around my mom’s diner and freaky sounds in the woods.
Autumn definitely won’t be dull. All I need to do is graduate…and stay alive.

Hello Cinephiles,
Today we’re talking about the 2018 film Ocean’s 8.

Convoluted, twisty, and ridiculously well planned; everything a good heist needs to be. I did miss the traditional hiccup in the plan but it was understandable to cut out.
Score: 1
The little development in the characters was extremely well done. It felt like veterans teaching a new generation. The acting was fantastic.
I do feel like the main character had the least growth and that’s a shame.
Score: 0.5
The dialogue is quippy and has so many Easter eggs you’d have to watch it several times to catch them all. It’s a movie you can passively watch and enjoy or pay really close attention and get a lot of it.
Score: 1
Visually stunning with amazing camera work and great costuming.
The music stayed with the classic jazz vibes of the original and added some more high fashion style.
Score: 1
Despite the complex story, twists, and numerous flashbacks, the movie was easy to follow and everyone in the family liked it.
Score: 1
A stand-out heist movie that manages to feel fresh while still bringing all the tropes we loved of the first three. A must-watch for heist and Ocean fans.
Final Score: 4.5 Stars out of 5
Back in 2022, we created a few recipes based on Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers. We posted about it and linked to an article.
This article ran in All Lit Up‘s Test Kitchen blog that has since been discontinued and taken down.
Fear not! We’ve rescued it from the bowels of the internet and here it is:
Jen and Éric Desmarais are the husband-and-wife writing team behind the new adult series The Gates of Westmeath and its first book, Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers (Renaissance Press). They’re also dynamos in the kitchen; check out their recipes for two dishes found in the book: stuffed mooseballs and a chocolate and chili brownie. Is it lunchtime yet?
When writing about the restaurant Amontillado in Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers, we wanted a place that was both trendy and had amazing food. The kind of place both Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent would feel comfortable. Somewhere that had the atmosphere of a party, but the sophistication of haute-cuisine.
The food itself needed to be elevated but also diverse. We wanted something that reflected the city of Westmeath, but also our main characters’ personalities and love of food.

The food was a fusion of Aboriginal, North American Italian, and Creole cuisines. […] Kennedy ordered, with Jason’s guidance, the Stuffed Mooseballs, which were moose meatballs in a primavera sauce stuffed with mushrooms and mozzarella.
‘This is amazing,’ Kennedy said, after trying both dishes.
–p211, Assassins! Accidental Matchmakers
Stuffed mooseballs is a variation of an exploding meatball that Éric had developed for an all-day marathon of Good Omens a few years ago. He adapted it to have more of an Aboriginal and creole flavour profile and it turned out pretty well. We’re fairly sure that Alice (the Amontillado executive chef) would be appalled by our presentation, but it was delicious.
Makes 12 balls.
The chocolate and chili brownie was an idea that came to Éric when he was enjoying some dark chocolate he’d gotten for Christmas. The recipe is a simple brownie with real chocolate, but he added some allspice and chilies to spice things up.
This makes me want to make them again.
If you make either of these, let me know how they turn out.
Stay safe and be kind,
Éric

Hello Cinephiles,
Today we’re talking about the 2025 film KPop Demon Hunters.
The story, like everything in this movie, is a clever combination of tropes, story structures, and character archetypes. It does something that most animation targeting children doesn’t: it creates a world with loose ends that can be explored later or just by the fans.
Score: 1
The characters take a lot of influence from Kpop personalities with a dash of fantasy archetypes and some mythological references. The design, the costumes, the movements, everything is intentional and recognizable to multiple different audiences.
I do wish we’d found out a little more about the other boys in the band, but I understand that would have bogged down the story.
Score: 1
So quipy and irreverent it was great. The dialogue that is said for drama purposes hits so much harder because of the humour in the rest of the movie.
Score: 1
Seen as a whole, the movie was stunning. There were a few times where they went lower resolution and the characters looked like claymation from adult swim. I’m not a fan of that style, but the rest of it is absolutely gorgeous.
The music was spectacular and is playing on repeat in our house.
Score: 1
My first time watching it, I was stressed for the characters and loved all the little twists. It’s a movie with a lot of layers. The second watch really showed how much detail they put into everything.
Jen and the kids are obsessed (as are a lot of other people). It’s a fun and heartwarming movie that doesn’t shy away from the dark.
Score: 1
Every detail matters and the movie has rich storytelling and fantastic music. The worst part of the movie is how epic a world they built and how we have to wait for more.
Final Score: 5 Stars out of 5*
*A 5 star review doesn’t mean the movie was perfect nor that it is perfect for everyone but it is a movie I believe is as close to perfect as possible.
