Nancy Drew (2007) – JenEric Movie Review

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2007 film Nancy Drew.

Story

There’s something about a lot of teen movies in the 2000’s where they were all a little surreal and almost cartoonish. This one went above and beyond. The entire film is unsettling as they move from one set piece to the next. Nancy doesn’t really do any real detective work, she just kinda stumbles into things.

Score: 0

Characters

There’s no character development. Nancy is amazing at everything but will walk off a plank on a scaffold. She’s smart until the plot needs her not to be.

I did enjoy the brief scenes of all the kids investigating or when Nancy and the two boys were working together.

Score: 0.5

Dialogue

The 1950’s dialogue from Nancy and her dad is juxtaposed by a sterilized “valley girl” accent of her classmates. It could have been interesting but was just uncomfortable.

Score: 0

Visuals and Music

The visuals were acceptable but alternating between horror camera angles and CW teen drama angles was very odd.

The music was well scored and overall well done.

Score: 1

Fun

The kids loved it and I’m sure a 10 year old me would have also. The adults didn’t enjoy it much but didn’t hate it either.

Score: 0.5

Overall

Despite an amazing cast, this movie spends more time referencing the books than remembering what made them interesting. It’s more cartoony comedy than mystery.

Final Score: 2 Stars out of 5

Cinderella III: A Twist in Time – JenEric Movie Review

How This Works – Read Other Reviews

Hello Cinephiles,

Today we’re talking about the 2007 film Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.

Story

Interesting, if overdone, idea of using time travel and magic to alter what originally happened in the first movie. It’s endearing for nostalgia and because the prince, still unnamed, is the nicest person alive.

Score: 0

Characters

The characters are all played by different actors than the original and they do a wonderful job. The king gets a little more character development, as do the stepsisters.

The prince again is absolutely the nicest person and really rolls with the ridiculousness of the plot.

Score: 1

Dialogue

Some of the dialogue is quite clever and some was intentionally funny. Overall, it wasn’t great.

Score: 0.5

Visuals and Music

The art was pretty, especially when it borrowed from the original, but not the best quality for Disney. They definitely took some shortcuts and it shows that this was straight to video release.

The music is pretty good and really takes inspiration from the original.

Score: 0.5

Fun

The first time I saw the movie I liked it, the second it was okay. It doesn’t have the narrative or humour levels that many Disney movies have that make it re-watchable. It’s better than the second one, but no where near the original.

All that said, it is watchable.

Score: 0.5

Overall

This is a cute straight to video Disney sequel that is fun to watch but utterly forgettable.

Final Score: 2.5 Stars out of 5
